An event Friday will recognize juniors and seniors at UK that major in International Studies and have fulfilled the merit requirements for national membership in the Sigma Iota Rho National Honor Society for International Studies.

The recognition will begin at 5 p.m. in the David Marksbury Building and will run until 7 p.m. There will also be a reception held afterwards.

The honor society invites all parents of the recognized students as well as all members of the UK community to attend.

The event will feature guest speaker Jean Muteba Rahier. Rahier is an international scholar, anthropologist and the director of Africana Studies at Florida International University.?His study on race in Africa and Europe corresponds to the honor society?s international theme. He has also studied race, national identity and gender in Latin America and Africa.

?His work on race in Latin America is path-breaking,? said Carlos de la Torre, who invited Rahier to the event.

Torre is the director of the International Studies, founding advisor of this chapter and main organizer of Friday?s event.

Rahier has done extensive research in the field of ethnography, which is a branch of anthropology that deals with the study of human behavior and cultural phenomena. His research in ethnography will be the topic of discussion at the event, as he will be presenting??A Self-Ethnography on the Wanderings and Meanderings of Identities.?

?Dr. Rahier?s reflections will provide a great learning experience that students and faculty from all disciplines will enjoy,? said MeNore Lake, the vice president of the honor society.

Lake is optimistic about the establishment and future of the honor society.

?Sigma Iota Rho will foster a community among my International Studies peers, and I am confident that our chapter will advance the university?s commitment to scholarship and service. The honor society will be a valuable addition to the program because it will reward our academic achievements and enrich our studies,? Lake said.
