Spending stumbles in Oct. as income growth stalls

5 hrs.

U.S. consumer spending fell in October for the first time in five months as income growth stalled, suggesting slower economic growth in the fourth quarter.

The Commerce Department said on Friday consumer spending fell 0.2 percent after an unrevised 0.8 percent rise in September.

It said it could not quantify the impact of superstorm Sandy, but added it made adjustments where source data was not yet available or did not reflect the effects of the storm.

Though the storm, which slammed the East Coast in late October, put a brake on automobile sales, the drop in spending last month was in part a reflection of the weak economic fundamentals.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, would be flat last month.

When adjusted for inflation, consumer spending fell 0.3 percent, the first decline since June, after rising 0.4 percent the prior month.

It was also the largest decline since September 2009 and implied growth in consumer spending this quarter would struggle to exceed the third-quarter's 1.4 percent annual pace, which was the slowest in more than a year.

While the economy grew 2.7 percent in the third quarter after advancing 1.3 percent in the prior three months, much of the boost came from the restocking of goods and robust government spending. That is likely to be lost in the final three months of the year.

Growth could also be pressured by the lingering effects of the storm and automatic deep cuts to government spending and tax increases that could drain $600 billion early next year unless Congress and the Obama administration agree on a less-severe plan to cut budget deficits.

Income was unchanged in October for the first time since April and followed a 0.4 percent gain in September. The department said private wages and salaries fell, reflecting work interruptions caused by Sandy.

The amount of income at the disposal of households after inflation and taxes dipped 0.1 percent after being flat in September. Despite weak income growth, the saving rate rose to 3.4 percent from 3.3 percent the prior month.?

Winning tickets sought in $588M Powerball jackpot

DEARBORN, Mo. (AP) ? The search is on for the country's newest multimillionaires, the holders of two tickets that matched all six numbers to split a record $588 million Powerball jackpot.

Lottery officials said Thursday that the winning tickets matching all six numbers were sold at a convenience store in suburban Phoenix and a gas station just off an interstate highway in a small northwestern Missouri town. Neither ticket holder had come forward.

The mystery fueled a giddy mood at the Trex Mart just outside Dearborn, Mo., as lottery officials and the media descended on the town of 500 people.

Cashiers Kristi Williams and Kelly Blount greeted customers with big smiles and questions about whether they had bought the winning ticket. No one had come forward to claim the prize by late Thursday morning, Missouri Lottery officials said.

"It's just awesome," Williams said. "It's so exciting. We can't even work."

Karen Meyers, a server at the Cook's Corner Cafe, where the daily special was roast beef and potatoes, said she didn't believe it at first when she heard the winning ticket had been sold nearby.

"I think it's wonderful! I hope someone local won it, not someone just passing through," she said. "It's a small town where everyone is really nice."

Kevin Bryan bought his ticket at the Trex Mart and made an extra trip to his mother's home in Dearborn to verify that the ticket he left on her counter wasn't, in fact, the winner.

"When I heard it was sold here in Dearborn I about fell over," Bryan said, as he hung Christmas lights outside his mother's home.

He said the only other local lottery win he could remember was when an area farmer won about $100,000 in scratch-off game years ago "and bought himself a combine."

The winning ticket sold in Arizona was purchased at a 4 Sons Food Store in Fountain Hills, state lottery officials said. Customers poured into the store, to check their tickets and share in the big moment.

"I think it's crazy, and I also think it's great," said Bob Chebat, who manages the 4 Sons. "I'm glad that all that work yesterday wasn't for nothing."

The store was swept up in a nationwide ticket-buying spree preceding Wednesday's drawing, with the big money enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery to buy a shot at the payout.

Clerks at 4 Sons sold 986 Powerball tickets Wednesday, which Chebat said was well above average.

Baron Hartell, son of the owner of the Missouri store, said if the winner isn't a local resident it might have been a truck driver. Interstate 29 connects Kansas City to the Canadian border, so it's a busy thoroughfare in both directions.

"Even the truck drivers who come around, we see them every day, so they all feel like all locals to us," he said.

Store manager Chris Naurez said business had been "crazy" for Powerball tickets lately and that the store had sold about $27,000 worth of tickets in the last few days.

"This really puts Dearborn on the map," he said.

Kenny Gilbert, the general manager of Trex Mart, suggested his staff would be sharing in the $50,000 bounty that the store will be awarded for selling one of the winning tickets.

"The response from the owner was, 'I guess we'll be able to give out Christmas bonuses,'" Gilbert said. "That's nice, especially at this time of year."

It appeared the winners had yet to come forward, and it wasn't clear if the tickets had been bought by individuals or groups. Winners have 180 days to claim their share of the prize money.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 5, 16, 22, 23, 29. The Powerball was 6. The $587.5 million payout represents the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history.

"If you find you're holding the winning ticket, be sure you sign the back and put it in a safe place until you can take it to a Missouri Lottery office," said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. "You will also want to get some legal and financial advice before you claim."

Americans went on a ticket-buying spree in the run-up to Wednesday's drawing, the big money enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery to purchase a shot at the second-largest payout in U.S. history.

Tickets sold at a rate of 130,000 a minute nationwide ? about six times the volume from a week ago. That pushed the jackpot even higher, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Multi-State Lottery Association. The jackpot rolled over 16 consecutive times without a winner.

In a Mega Millions drawing in March, three ticket buyers shared a $656 million jackpot. This remains the largest lottery payout of all time.

Shifting account of CIA's Libya talking points fuels Rice controversy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When U.S. intelligence officials testified behind closed doors two weeks ago, they were asked point blank whether they had altered the talking points on which U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice based her comments about the Benghazi attacks that have turned into a political firestorm.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, acting CIA Director Michael Morell and National Counterterrorism Center Director Matthew Olsen each said no, according to two congressional sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The next day, November 16, former CIA director David Petraeus testified before the same congressional intelligence committees and also replied no to the question of whether he had changed the talking points, three congressional sources said.

The CIA on Tuesday told lawmakers that it had in fact changed the wording of the unclassified talking points to delete a reference to al Qaeda, according to senators who met with Morell on Tuesday. It appeared to be the first time that the CIA acknowledged it was the agency that made that change, congressional sources said.

"There was never any effort or intent to mislead or deceive. This was a complicated and imperfect coordination process, and no single person had all the information on the edits," a senior U.S. intelligence official said. "At the end of that process, however, the final version was signed off on by all the appropriate people at CIA and throughout the interagency."

Officials pointed out that the top intelligence officials would not necessarily have known when every edit to the talking points were made along the way.

At the November 15 hearing, Morell and Clapper were asked how each of the edits to the talking points were made, they each answered they did not know, but agreed to look into the editing and coordination process, officials said.

Petraeus a day later told lawmakers he had OK'd the final version of the talking points, which did not include the reference to al Qaeda, officials said.

The Obama administration's shifting explanations of who changed the talking points - which were the basis for its early, flawed public explanation of the attacks in Libya - have fueled Republican anger, and could prevent Rice, and maybe even Morell, from getting promotions.

"This is the fourth story about who changed the talking points and the third reason why - after all the agencies appeared under oath and said, ?I don't know who changed the talking points.' To say I'm disappointed, confused, is an understatement," Senator Lindsey Graham, a leading critic of the White House's handling of Benghazi, told Reuters on Wednesday.

Rice has said she relied on the talking points from the intelligence agencies when she did a round of Sunday talk shows days after the September 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound and a CIA base in Benghazi. In those appearances, she said the violence arose spontaneously from a protest of an anti-Islam film rather than a premeditated strike.

U.S. intelligence officials have since said that militants with ties to al Qaeda affiliates were likely involved in the attacks that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. In a statement on Tuesday, Rice acknowledged there never had been a protest.

Republicans have criticized Rice's earlier comments as an attempt by the administration to play down al Qaeda connections to the attack ahead of the presidential elections, to avoid denting President Barack Obama's image on fighting terrorism. During the election campaign, Obama angrily denied that.

INTELLIGENCE CZAR REVIEW

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the CIA and the other spy agencies, is reviewing who made the changes to the talking points from the original set that was drafted by the CIA on September 14, congressional sources said.

On November 1, two weeks before the top intelligence officials testified at the closed-door hearings, congressional sources said, a CIA staffer had told a staff-level meeting of the congressional intelligence committees that the talking points drafted by her unit were changed after leaving their hands, leading to the early impression that the CIA had not been involved in changing the original language.

The CIA staffer was unaware of edits made to the document at the spy agency after it left her hands, other officials said. At another meeting on Capitol Hill later in November, the staffer clarified that al Qaeda was still in the version when it left her hands and she concurred with the near final version that did not include al Qaeda in it.

The initial draft referred to "attacks" carried out by "extremists with ties to al Qaeda." But by the time Rice received them before she went on the talk shows September 16., "attacks" had changed to "demonstrations" and "with ties to al Qaeda" had been deleted, multiple U.S. sources have said.

The question of who altered the talking points has been repeatedly asked of the White House and intelligence agencies.

Deputy White House national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters onboard Air Force One en route to Thailand on November 17 that the White House made only minor adjustments to the talking points to change the reference to the diplomatic facility as a "consulate" because it was not formally a consulate. "The only edit ... made by the White House was the factual edit as to how to refer to the facility," he said.

Because the question has become such a flashpoint, some lawmakers who met with the CIA's Morell, who accompanied Rice to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, were flabbergasted that he told them - inaccurately - in their morning meeting that the FBI had altered the wording. The CIA later corrected his statement.

"CIA officials contacted us and indicated that Acting Director Morell misspoke in our earlier meeting. The CIA now says that it deleted the al-Qaeda references, not the FBI. They were unable to give a reason as to why," Graham and two other Republican senators said in a statement on Tuesday.

"This was an honest mistake and it was corrected as soon as it was realized. There is nothing more to this," an intelligence official said about Morell's fumble.

A MORELL NOMINATION?

Graham has suggested he would hold up the nomination of Morell if Obama nominates him to be the new CIA director, as well as that of Rice if she is nominated to be Secretary of State, because of the administration's response to the Benghazi events. Morell and Rice are both believed to be on Obama's short list for those jobs.

But Morell appears to be fairly popular on Capitol Hill. Senator Saxby Chambliss, the senior Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, doubted that Morell's reported verbal stumble on the talking points would disqualify him for a promotion should Obama choose him.

"I'm not sure that in and of itself would keep him from ever being confirmed," Chambliss told Reuters. The Senate must approve such appointments.

"Mike was actually not the director when this (the attack on Benghazi) took place. And he's kind of putting Humpty Dumpty back together again," Chambliss added, calling Morell a "smart, straightforward guy."

Former boxing champ Mike Tyson to take one-man show on the road

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson plans to take his one-man theater show on the road across the United States early next year.

Tyson, 45, made the announcement on ABC's late-night show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Tuesday.

"Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth" is an autobiographical monologue performed by Tyson in which he reflects upon his tough childhood in Brooklyn, the absence of his father and his self-described "reckless and destructive" behavior. It premiered in Las Vegas in April and had a run on Broadway.

Tyson, whose reputation was boosted by a cameo in the 2009 hit comedy "The Hangover," told Kimmel that his inspiration for the show came from a one-man performance of "A Bronx Tale" in Las Vegas.

The 23-date tour, which features the Broadway show directed by Spike Lee, is scheduled to begin on February 12 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the city where Tyson was convicted in 1992 of raping then 18-year-old beauty queen Desiree Washington.

Tyson, who at the age of 20 became the youngest world heavyweight champion, served three years in prison before restarting his boxing career in 1995.

He later became better known for his erratic behavior than for his prowess in the ring. Tyson notoriously bit off portions of opponent Evander Holyfield's ears in a 1997 bout and publicly said he wanted to eat British champion Lennox Lewis' children.

Tyson retired from boxing in 2006.

Review: 'Hairy Tales' by Arges Systems | Video Game Blog, Video ...

Genre: Puzzle?

Platforms: App Store for Mac / iOS, Desura for Windows

Developer: Arges Systems

Release date: October 5th 2012

You will tear your hair out.

Hairy Tales is the debut offering from fledgling indie studio Arges Systems. Developed with the Unity 3D engine, it takes the form of an isometric tile-swapping puzzle-game, with a large amount of inspiration drawn from both traditional board games and the Amiga classic, ?Lemmings?. In this game, you must safely guide your hirsute protagonist across a board comprised of a number of hexagonal tiles. Naturally, this board contains all manner of hazards and obstacles, and like the aforementioned Lemmings, your charge has very little concern for his own safety. He is happy to blindly rush off in whatever direction you face him, oblivious to his surroundings. By moving and rotating tiles, you must force him to navigate a safe path to the levels exit. Along the way, you will collect power-ups which allow you to clear obstacles and improve your end of level rating. This is all couched in a story about defeating some evil ?corruption? befouling the folksy paradise which ?The Hairies? inhabit ? The Hairies, of course, being the little caveman-like creatures under your command. The backstory is vaguely told in a number of short animated cutscenes, and really serves little purpose in the game save as a framing device for the puzzles.

First of all, right off the bat, we have to confront that title: ?Hairy Tales? is one of the worst monikers for a game I have come across in a long time. Not since ?Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake-Eater? has a title so invited innuendo and satire. It tells you literally nothing about the game, except for indicating a possible emphasis on story (misleading, to say the least), and a vague suggestion of events of a trichological nature (okay, it?s a little closer to the truth on that one). One should never judge a book by its cover, of course, but having a title that sounds like it was dreamt up by an adult entertainment exec is not really a good jumping-off point for an innocent puzzler.

YouTube Preview Image

Now to the gameplay. Hairy Tales introduces you gently to the games main mechanics, with the early 10 levels or so providing you with simple tutorials on how to manipulate the game world, and your character within it. New elements to the puzzles, such as fences and arrows which redirect your character, and enemies which must be defeated by using power-ups, are drip fed slowly into the levels. Hairy Tales does a good job of not holding your hand too much, and doesn?t condescend you as so many games seem to these days. It trusts you to figure out the puzzle solutions for yourself, and gives you multiple ways to achieve each. However, there is a catch. Hairy Tales gets brutal very quickly, and I mean ?smash your computer with a hammer and wish terrible things upon the games ?creators? brutal. Literally, one level you are just doodling along, admiring the cutesy animations and folky background music, completing a by-the-numbers puzzle, and then suddenly BAM!?.you are hit by a difficulty curve so steep that even Evil Knievel would have soiled himself at the sight of it. Honestly, it?s incredibly noticeable, and one has to wonder how many people looking for a casual, colourful gaming experience a la Angry Birds would be dismayed by it. For a game so innocent in its appearance, a deeply challenging chin-scratcher lies ? paradoxically ? just beneath its exterior. Those looking for a more complex, longer lasting puzzle experience, though, will find great value for money in Hairy Tales. Because it doesn?t force you to accept a single solution to a puzzle, and guide you to this conclusion with the usual winks and nudges, the game makes you feel a deep sense of satisfaction at the end of each level. They?re not just purely mentally challenging, either. In many situations you must rapidly move and rotate tiles whilst your character is legging it round the map, meaning you rely on your reflexes as much as you rely on your noodle. This blend of quick responses and forward planning give the game a similar feel to Portal, and that same sense of feeling peculiarly powerful when crafting a solution.

However, the gameplay is not without its faults. Its not just the puzzles themselves that pose an obstacle ? sometimes, the controls and camera ?are as challenging as the level design. I lost count of the number of times that I was nearing the end of a level, only to have my grizzly avatar thrown off a cliff because of a misplaced tile. The controls are incredibly finicky, and when it comes to camera, you?ve got two choices ? extreme close-up, or floaty isometric view. Sometimes, it?s not very clear which way a character or tile is facing, and it would be extremely useful to be able to rotate the camera ? a feature which, in my mind, is inexplicably missing. Instead, you have to waste a life by just setting your little guy running, and see which way he goes. Needless to say, this leads to some moments of hair-pulling frustration.

Picture of the game map

Unity 3D graphics engine showing off its cel shading

The visuals in the game are nice but not terribly unique. It?s the quirky, deformed art style we?ve seen in every platformer / puzzler since Crash Bandicoot ? big red toadstools, lanky, large headed characters, the slimy greens and browns of the foul ?corrupted? swampland. Nothing here to write home about, but it?s all done nicely and suits the feel of the game. The now ubiquitous cel shading is back for another game, but it?s something the Unity engine seems built to do, and looks good on a mobile screen. Much of the same can be said for the audio ? it?s nice and functional, it works, but it?s not going to be something you?re humming at work for days. Also, some of the sound effects the in-game creatures make are incredibly grating after awhile, and I found myself turning off the SFX pretty early on.

The game currently consists of 72 levels spread over three game worlds. Given the games difficulty, it?s enough to keep you busy for a good long time, especially if you?re up to the task of getting top scores on every level. If you like your puzzlers tough, it?s good value for money and should keep you occupied on those long commutes over the run up to Christmas.

Pros:

  • Solidly challenging gameplay.
  • An abundance of levels will keep you going for a long time.
  • Pretty, if uninspiring graphics and music

Cons:

  • INSANE jump in difficulty, from childs play to hellish brain-torture.
  • Frustrating camera angles.
  • Occasionally shonky controls can be irksome.

Final Score:

If you like ?em tough, and you?re patient, then this is for you. If not, then avoid (or risk going bald with frustration.)
