Healthy Relationships, Violence Prevention and Lessons from a ...

Commentary, April Suwalsky

Lucia came into the dorm hall lounge and crashed on the couch across from me. ?The counselor said I am addicted to him,? she whispered, and immediately burst into tears. Tears became deep and guttural sobs. It was our first year of college, and Lucia was stuck in a relationship with a longtime partner who was manipulative and emotionally abusive. The story, although Lucia couldn?t see it at the time, would have a happy ending.? She eventually found the courage to end the relationship, double major in political science and women?s and gender studies, march to Take Back The Night and volunteer as a peer health educator to other students.

As social beings, relationships are the heart of our existence, and yet we often neglect to be attentive to building healthy and meaningful ones. Moreover, we often look the other way when we encounter those that are unhealthy. We must be doing a lot of blind and ignorant living, because unhealthy relationships are pervasive; violence is everywhere.

Reflecting on these themes, I cannot help but consider the recent death of Whitney Houston. Not only was her premature departure a sad commentary on the often unhealthy relationships she negotiated?with family members, business partners, substances, the media, her fans and detractors?but it is also a poignant, ironic twist on her music and lyrics that championed love, and brought her worldwide fame. Like so many others, my formative years were marked by teen dances, emotional highs and lows, and ?I Will Always Love You.? Whitney?s songs were like a cryptic soundtrack playing in an already dark room, a waterfall of experiences captured in rhythm and blues.

??I?m Every Woman?

I personally have been seriously harassed on multiple occasions and have friends and family members who have been raped, abused, stalked, and assaulted. As a community advocate and mentor, I frequently encounter individuals here in Richmond caught in unhealthy relationships. I am also inspired by people in the community who are making meaningful efforts to incite positive change, like those who choose to participate in the city?s annual Sisters in Solidarity gathering for International Women?s Day.? Those efforts are comforting, but there is much work to be done.

Our social indicators reflect some hard truths ? domestic violence and child and family service cases are increasing in number and becoming more severe. At the same time, budgets for preventive care and intervention services have been cut.? Statistics on relationship violence, meanwhile, are truly staggering:

  • 29 percent of teenagers who had been in relationships reported experiencing sexual or physical abuse or receiving threats of physical violence from their partners, according to one study. (?Possession Obsession? Teaching Tolerance, No. 41, Spring 2012).
  • More than 1 in 3 women have experienced sexual assault, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime, and the same is true for 1 in 4 men. (CDCP survey, National intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, as reported by CNN)
  • Domestic violence is more than three times as likely to occur when couples are experiencing high levels of financial strain. (STAND! For Families Free of Violence).
  • A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds, and almost five children die every day as a result of child abuse. (www.childhelp.org)

These are not just ?people? with ?problems.?? These are defining human rights issues.

??Something in Common?

Some have pointed to a ?machismo culture? that is prevalent in Richmond, and throughout society. It is evident and perpetuated in our media, schools and daily lives. ?We are socialized as men to take that on from a very young age,? said Robert Bunce, Program Director at the West Contra Costa Public Education Fund (The Ed. Fund) in Richmond, and former Program Director of WEAVE (Women Escaping a Violent Environment) ? the largest domestic violence and sexual assault resource center in Sacramento County. ?Until someone [points it out] to us, it?s something so ingrained that we aren?t really aware of it.? It contributes to an imbalance in relationships, to violence, to sexualized violence,? he stated.? It is a difficult cycle to change.

One promising initiative is the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault?s (CALCASA) ?My Strength is Not For Hurting?/Men of Strength campaign and training. Men of Strength encourages men to help stop rape and sexual violence by leading lives based on caring, equality and respect. It challenges men to reconsider what it is to ?be a man.? Trainings like these can be transformative, pivotal experiences in participants? lives. Men of Strength has been implemented in Richmond in partnership with Community Violence Solutions.

??Count on Me?

Before we are ?grown,? children and youth need opportunities to learn about and model healthy relationships in school. Currently, many teachers and schools are not equipped to address or mediate these issues in partnership with students in the classroom. There needs to be more dialogue and a willingness to talk.

We need to educate and nurture the whole child?taking into consideration social and emotional development as core elements of student success. ?I believe healthy relationships are based on self knowledge and self regulation,? said Mark Collin, who is Founder and Executive Director of Dovetail Learning, and a practicing Marriage and Family Therapist. ?Without a healthy relationship to one?s self, there cannot be a healthy relationship with others,? he said.

The Toolbox Project by Dovetail Learning is a prevention/intervention training and kindergarten-sixth grade curriculum that offers students a set of twelve life skills ?tools.? The Toolbox Project empowers students, teachers, and families with a ?common language? that strengthens resilience and promotes social awareness and knowledge. Collin explained, ?[It] fosters and re-humanizes children and their families? abilities to achieve personal empowerment, social intelligence and empathy for self and others.?

The Toolbox Project is currently active at Coronado Elementary and Richmond College Prep Schools. (www.dovetaillearning.org)

??Exhale (Shoop, Shoop)?

We also must support and facilitate healthy relationships during out-of-school time. There are far fewer spaces for low-income students in out-of-school time programs than the number of students in need. We must extend these critical developmental opportunities?for example sports and art?to all young people.

Kenneth Dunn, 20, a student and Richmond resident, regularly practices Tae Kwon Do. The martial art trains him and his peers in discipline, body awareness, and mental and physical agility?as well as affords them time to de-stress from the challenges of daily living. He recounted this personal experience:

?My friend used to be very aggressive; then, he took Tae Kwon Do for a while, and when he got out he would be more relaxed. When he stopped practicing, he went back to being aggressive because he didn?t have anywhere to take out his aggression.? This is a powerful example of the need to ?exhale.? Physical activity and creative outlets generate important safe spaces to grapple with difficult issues, or model and plan responses to challenges.

Moreover, ?If you train alongside someone you?re not going to be fully angry with that person, and it also helps people deal with conflicts in their lives because they get time to think,? Dunn continued.

??I Look to You?

In the end, young people (all of us, really,) emulate the examples we see in our lives. We all can and must be role models and mentors?facilitating honest dialogue, fostering trust, and treating one another with respect. I defer again to Robert Bunce:

?It?s not just the responsibility of the parents?it?s [that of] teachers?and every community member. And if everybody in our community takes on that role of being that positive role model?and they know they have that responsibility?our youth will have a much better chance of having healthy relationships in life.?

As a community, we can together break the iterative cycles of violence and unhealthy relationships. Many lives are at stake. Let?s take back the soundtrack, and rework it into anthems of strength, respect, peace, and joy.

Link Between Extreme Weather And Climate Change

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio?. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

NEAL CONAN, HOST:

This is TALK OF THE NATION from NPR News. I'm Neal Conan.

Monstrous tornadoes tore through North Texas earlier this week. You probably saw video of truck trailers tossed around like Frisbees. U.S. tornado season started early this year and has been blamed for 57 deaths so far, none, luckily, in Texas this week. That follows some of the most unusual weather in memory, including an exceptionally mild winter in much of the country and extended drought in the Southwest and parts of California.

If you have questions about whether and climate change, give us a call: 800-989-8255. Email: talk@npr.org. You can also join the conversation on our website. That's at npr.org, click on TALK OF THE NATION. Kevin Trenberth, distinguished senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research joins us by phone from his office in Boulder, Colorado. Nice to have you with us today.

KEVIN TRENBERTH: Hi, Neal. It's nice to be here.

CONAN: And we're here in the middle of the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. Of course, the cherry blossoms all came and went.

TRENBERTH: They came a bit early today this year.

CONAN: Yes, indeed.

TRENBERTH: Spring has been moving up. It has been generally the case, but - this year especially so. And the tornado season seems to have moved up as well.

CONAN: And that means there are going to be more of these storms, no?

TRENBERTH: Well, you know, tornadoes vary quite a lot from year to year, and they depend on other factors, as to whether the jet stream is in just the right location and certainly the warm moist air coming out of the Gulf. And, you know, that's part of the climate change aspect, is that the air coming out of the Gulf is a bit warmer and moister. And so it helps to invigorate the thunderstorms that host these tornadoes. So that is one factor that's underplayed, but there is a lot of variability, of course, from year to year.

CONAN: Variability from year to year. And that's what a lot of people say. Last winter, we had a lot of snow, for example, in the Northeast. There were scarcely any this year.

TRENBERTH: Yes. Well, that was true. Further west there, you know, you may recall flooding along the Missouri as a result of that. You know, ironically with global warming, you can get more snow in the middle of winter because the atmosphere can hold more moisture. It's about, you know, 4 percent for every degree Fahrenheit warmer. The atmosphere can hold more moisture as long as there's a supply of moisture from somewhere. This year, the whole of the jet stream has been pushed well to the North. And in North America, it's just been remarkably mild throughout the, you know, all of this winter and especially in March.

CONAN: And we saw some - to say the temperatures were unseasonable seems an understatement.

TRENBERTH: Yes. Well, you know, the official statistics, I think, in March said that there were, what, 7,755 U.S. temperature records broken in March, you know, and that's absolutely remarkable. It's certainly an indication that we're not experiencing normal weather anymore. It's not the kind of thing one expects under an unchanging climate, and, therefore, it indicates that the climate is indeed changing. So this has got a global warming element to it.

CONAN: So as the climate warms, what kinds of changes can we expect? And again, a lot of variation but as a rule.

TRENBERTH: Yes. And so the main memory of the warming occurs in the oceans. The oceans have warmed up. And, in general, they're about a degree Fahrenheit warmer than they were, say, back in the early 1970s. And as a result, the air is warmer and moister over the oceans. Over land, the land can dry out a little quicker. This is especially relevant when we have droughts such as we had last year in Texas. And the drought sets in a little quicker. It is more intense, longer-lasting and then sets the stage for wildfires.

And so those are the cumulative effects that are really important. And the key thing then is that all of the weather that is occurring, all of the storms are occurring in an environment that is simply different than it used to be. It's generally a warmer weather environment, and it means that the rains tend to be heavier. We saw a special case of that last year with Hurricane Irene dumping all kinds of wet weather along the East Coast and flooding many areas. And then the droughts are tending to be longer and hasher with increased risk of wildfire. And we've seen that in the U.S. over the last year as well.

CONAN: One degree warmer in the oceans, it doesn't sound like a lot.

TRENBERTH: It doesn't sound like a lot. It corresponds to about a 4 percent increase in moisture on average, which can - or four or 5 percent. And it can easily be five to 10 percent when it gets caught up in storms and provides the extra buoyancy in storms, and so the storms become invigorated. And this applies to tropical storms. It can apply to individual thunderstorms.

And the key thing then is that we always have weather, some of which is going in the same direction as the climate change. And when we approach those, what used to be limits before, now we're going through them and we're breaking records. And you know, this is sometimes the straw that breaks the camel's back kind of syndrome. You cross the threshold and suddenly you're in a completely different territory, and some bad things can happen as a consequence.

CONAN: Well, we'll get some people on the line who have some questions for you, but I wanted to ask latitude. Are the same effects - are the effects roughly the same at the latitude of New York or San Francisco as they are much further north in the Arctic?

TRENBERTH: Well, the Arctic is a special case, of course, because of the Arctic sea ice, and there's been a tremendous loss of Arctic sea ice, which peaks in the summertime, about a 40 percent decrease since the 1970s. And that's absolutely remarkable. And that has influences into the fall and into the winter and is probably affecting some of the weather patterns. And it certainly affects snow in the surrounding areas because it's sort of like the lake effect that occurs in Buffalo, New York, prior to the Great Lakes freezing over. You get a lot of snow in surrounding areas because the winds just pick up the moisture off of the open ocean and dump it down in the form of snow.

And so this can have an influence on the weather patterns. And it may be one of the things which has helped to weaken the jet stream a little bit and therefore enabled the weather patterns to get stuck a little more. And therefore we get more persistent warm periods and sometimes even cold periods. And so, you know, in late January, early February, there was a very cold outbreak in Europe last year - this year, sorry.

CONAN: Yeah, earlier this year and...

TRENBERTH: Yes.

CONAN: ...just to say that there was that extraordinary storm in Alaska off the Bering Sea, but it's not the storm that was all that extraordinary. It's just that there was so much less ice that was protecting the coastal villages that the water was washing directly ashore.

TRENBERTH: Yes. And so the sea ice is changing. Alaska has actually been fairly cool this year though, while the rest of the U.S. has been quite warm this past winter.

CONAN: Let's get some callers in on the conversation. We're speaking with Kevin Trenberth, a distinguished senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and chairman of Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment at the World Climate Research Program. We'll start with Isaac, and Isaac is on the line with us from Camden in South Carolina.

ISAAC: Hey. How are you guys? Good to hear about this conversation. I'm a geologist in Camden and lived in South Carolina mostly my entire life. I moved here after Hugo. And the hurricane season seems to kind of always miss the Carolina coast and Northern Georgia. What's the control there? Is it the Gulf current? Is it the jet stream? And is it something that, let's say, climate change would, you know, maybe disrupt that control and we'd get hit by back-to-back Hugos? Is that something that we could maybe, you know, preparing for?

CONAN: Or at least worry about. Kevin Trenberth?

TRENBERTH: Yes. So with hurricanes, you know, the main control over where an individual hurricane goes happens to be the weather situation, just where the low and high pressure systems are, where the jet stream is. And so there's a fair bit of a crapshoot as to exactly where the track is. The track does change a bit seasonally, whether it's an early season, mid season or late season. There tend to be distinctive patterns. And it does change a bit with influences like El Nino. In fact, El Nino tends to suppress activity in the Atlantic, and there are good prospects for that this year, a less active hurricane season this year. With global warming, we do expect that there will be more intense storms, but exactly where they go is, as I say, a bit of a crapshoot.

ISAAC: OK. Well, actually, I have one more question. This is a little bit more abstract. One of my professors back in undergrad told me that if there were a massive melting of continental ice, it would increase the volume of water in the ocean, thus increasing the weight of water on the crust and possibly leading to a massive scale volcanism that would lead to nuclear winter. Is that a possible outcome in global warming?

TRENBERTH: Well, there's a bunch of steps there.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

TRENBERTH: Certainly melting of ice on land is happening. You know, Greenland is melting a little bit. The glaciers are melting. But, of course, it doesn't change the overall weight on the planet. It's redistributing it. And so it goes into the ocean (technical difficulties) rising at a rate of just over three millimeters per year, 2.2 inches since 1992, which is when we've had global measurements of sea level from satellites that are looking down from space with altimeters that can actually measure the sea level to millimeter accuracy. And so sea level is definitely going up, and it does, as you say, change the distribution of weight on the crust, which begins to adjust. And it may indeed have some geological consequences in that regard.

ISAAC: Let's hope (unintelligible) the sea is on our side.

CONAN: Thanks very much, Isaac.

ISAAC: Thank you.

CONAN: We're talking with Kevin Trenberth, distinguished senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. You're listening to TALK OF THE NATION from NPR News. And you mentioned the one degree increase in temperature in the oceans. You mentioned that rise in the water level as a result of ice melt. Is it accelerating? Can people tell that?

TRENBERTH: Well, it has accelerated from certainly the 20th century and especially the early part of the 20th century somewhat. Sea level went up as best we can tell through, you know, they we're just looking at individual islands and a number of coastal stations where there's long records. And it's also a little complicated by the fact that the land can move around because of, you know tectonic activities. But, you know, the best estimate overall is that sea level went up about six inches in the 20th century. And, you know, we've gone up about two inches, a bit over two and a quarter inches since 1992.

So we're going up - sea level is going up at the rate at over - a bit over a foot per century, but there are a number of expectations that this could easily double and - or even triple, you know? It could be as much as three feet by 2100. Although I think that's probably pushing it a little bit, but certainly the rate is not slowing down.

CONAN: Let's go next to Gary. Gary with us from Cincinnati.

GARY: Yes. Thank you. My question is, as we rotate on our axis, I understand that there's an adjustment that's taking place there. Earthquakes can affect that. And then the other thing we have that's currently going on is the solar flares of the sun, and that has an effect on the electromagnetic field. And so I was wondering how the two of those affect our weather changes.

TRENBERTH: All right. Yes, the winds can change over the surface of the oceans and also in blowing up against mountains and things like that, which causes some stresses on the surface of the Earth. Usually it's pretty resilient to that. The biggest changes that we observe are associated with the El Nino phenomenon, and they actually cause a change in the length of day, which is measurable. It's a very tiny amount. It's about a nanosecond or something like that. But it is actually measurable. So the whole rate at which the earth is rotating can change a little bit because of the - because of those kinds of effects. But the effects on weather are probably miniscule.

The sun activity, it's not just the flares and the electromagnetic effects. It's also the effects on the radiation and especially in the ultraviolet, which can affect the ozone layer. And so we went through a period up until about one or two years ago, say, where it was very quiet. The sun was very quiet, and people were speculating that maybe the sun was not going to be as active in the future, but certainly it's been active in the last year or so, back to what we've seen before. And in the quiet phase, it does cool - cause a very slight cooling of the climate. So it probably offset a little bit of the global warming that we otherwise would've seen. The estimate is that, you know, maybe 10 or 15 percent.

CONAN: Wow.

TRENBERTH: That may be why we haven't seen as much - quite as much warming as we might have expected, but with the sun, you know, more active now, it certainly sets the stage that the global warming effects are not being offset, and so they begin to show their face a little more.

CONAN: Gary, thanks very much for the call. And, Kevin Trenberth, can you tell us what one indicator do you watch most carefully?

TRENBERTH: Well, it depends on what for, but if you wanted to watch one indicator for global warming, I would say probably the global sea level now is one of the better ones because it integrates two effects. It integrates the warming of the oceans, which are then expanding, and it also throws in the component relating to the melting of land ice. And it's much less subject to weather effects. And so when we're looking at temperatures, you know, one of the main indicators that many people follow is the estimates of the global mean temperature. But that can actually vary quite a bit with weather, whether the warm spots are on land versus over the ocean, and it can also vary a bit with El Nino. When we get an El Nino following an El Nino is when we tend to have the highest global mean temperatures. And during La Nina conditions, when its' cold out in the tropical Pacific, you know, over a region which is bigger than the United States, then the whole of the - the global mean temperature tends to be a bit lower and it can have influences like that in the Pacific Rim countries. So it's much more subject to some of these so-called natural variability effects.

CONAN: So watch for the level of the oceans. Thanks very much.

GARY: Yes.

CONAN: Kevin Trenberth of the National Center for Atmospheric Research joined us from his office in Boulder, Colorado. Tomorrow, TALK OF THE NATION: SCIENCE FRIDAY, a look at biodiversity in cities. We'll be back on Monday to talk about one of the most loved and hated teams in sports: the New York Yankees. Damn Yankees. I'm Neal Conan. This is NPR News.

The Many Reasons for Live-In Care - Health And Fitness Tips

For those who have never heard of live-in care, there is a lot to learn, and it can be overwhelming. There?s no telling just how effective live-in care can be, although most people consider it to be preferable to going into a nursing home. After all, nursing homes can be very uncomfortable and are simply not worth going into. That said, live-in care is approachable, enjoyable for the people involved and doesn?t have to be stressful. The following are just a few reasons why one might want to consider live-in care, all of which make a good case for this.

If you want to age well, you?ll want to do so with as much dignity as possible. Dignity is something that a lot of people underestimate, yet it can make a huge difference in one?s life. Live-in care provides people with the dignity that they need in order to feel their best at all times, no matter the situation.

Even though a lot of people think live-in care is an expensive alternative to nursing homes, the fact is that it just is not. Live-in care can actually be exceptionally inexpensive, which is just one reason that it is so worth pursuing. If you have any idea as to what you might like to do when you grow old, chances are you?ll find live-in care will allow you with the money to do so.

Comfort is the name of the game when it comes to aging well, and should never be thrown under the bus. That said, it?s next to impossible to be comfortable when living in a nursing home, as the environment simply doesn?t provide for comfort. With live-in care, however, the opposite is often true, and one can usually find themselves being quite comfortable in their own home environment.

Staying fresh can be difficult when one gets old; this is simply part of aging. In order to do so, it helps to have constant human interaction, which comes along with companion care. Companion care can keep you fresh no matter how old you get, and no matter the circumstances.

Aging in a way that is professional is quite important, as it can help to keep you alive for as long as possible. The professionals that work in home care know what they?re doing; otherwise, they wouldn?t have been hired. As a result, you can rest easy knowing that you?re in good hands with live-in care.

Don?t deal with stress when aging; it simply isn?t healthy for anyone involved. There are ways around this, and more often than not home care is the solution. The amount of stress you can cut down on by implementing live-in care is more than most people realize, and should always be taken into consideration.

For best results, consider live-in care over nursing homes.

Credit Cards can be both helpful and harmful | DINKS Finance

visaI have a love/hate relationship with my credit card. I loved using my credit cards in the past when I needed them, I hated paying off the debt over several years, and now I love using them responsibly and watching my credit score get stronger and stronger each month.

I have definitely made my share of financial mistakes in the past and after I finally hit rock bottom I decided to become a responsible young adult and change my financial life around.? I decided that I was sick and tired of having debt and making monthly payments onto my credit cards because that money could otherwise be better spent.? I started paying off all of my credit cards with automatic payments and I set a target date to become debt free.

I know that debt can be overwhelming, but it can also be overcome.? Financial mistakes are fixable and all we have to do is want to change. The financial system does give second chances and as long as we learn from our mistakes our financial future does not have to be a repeat of our financial past.

People can rebuild their credit history by continuously paying off their debts on a regular basis, keeping their balances low relative to the overall limit, and no maintaining more credit card than they need.

The key to building a strong credit history is to know when and why to use our credit cards. I used to misuse my credit cards in the past and that is how I found myself with tens of thousands of dollars in debt at a very young age.? Now every single time that I want to use my credit card I think about my purchase and I ask myself ?Would I have made this purchase in the past?? If the answer is ?yes? then I don?t swipe my card.

Here are Some Financially Responsible Reasons to Use Your Credit Card:

If the store does not accept debit cards as a form of payment and we don?t have cash.? It?s ok to us our Credit Card in this situation because this is beyond our control. We just have to make sure that we make a payment to our Credit Card as soon as possible in order to avoid interest charges.

If we are a little bit short on cash for our purchase. This is a good reason to use our Credit Card because we do have the money, just not on us. We can make a payment to our Credit Card as soon as we get home.

For the Extended Warranty.? If we have saved up for a big purchase such as appliances or electronics it?s a good idea to charge the purchase on our Credit Card for the extended purchase warranty and pay off our purchase as soon as possible.? We purchase our item, we save on interest, and we still get a guarantee.

(Btw if you?re looking for a great new card check out Budgets Are Sexy?s list of great credit card offers. Maybe you?ll find one you like there.)

Here are Some Reasons Why We Should Never Use Our Credit Card:

Just because an item is on sale.? Unnecessary spending is a major reason why people accumulate debt.

If we constantly find our self short on cash.? This is a budgeting issue and using our Credit Card until we receive our next pay check is not fixing the problem, it is only a temporary solution. We need to go over our budget and make cuts in our monthly spending to make sure that we can afford our daily living necessities.

As a personal loan or cash advance.? There is no grace period on cash advances and we are charged interest as of the day we take the money.? The interest rate on cash advances is also a lot higher and therefore we should try to avoid them.

Pedals, gears, and poles: India's makeshift wheelchairs

Thousands of disabled commuters navigate busy streets of New Delhi in wheelchairs that look like bikes, powering themselves with their hands and steering with a metal pole.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

?At first glance, Su Kumar could be taken for a bicyclist. Pedaling through the snarl of cars, trucks, buses, and donkey carts, he rolls right along with New Delhi?s chaotic traffic. But instead of using his feet, Mr. Kumar, who uses a wheelchair, pedals with his hands. He?s one of thousands of disabled commuters in the capital who navigate the city on wheels.

In a country that has few amenities for those with disabilities, innovation is critical. Kumar?s wheelchair looks like a three-wheeled bike with a bucket seat. He travels about 10 miles to work each day, powering himself with his hands and steering with a metal pole.

Kumar has been unable to walk since he was a child. But he considers himself fortunate. Fifteen years ago, a local charity gave him his wheelchair, which cost more than $100. He says it has made all the difference.

?I can do everything with this wheelchair,? says Kumar with a smile.

Wheelchair users not only navigate Delhi?s tricky streets, they have turned their wheelchairs into makeshift stores, barbershops, and vegetable stalls.
On a sweltering afternoon, a group of jabbering children surrounds a man juggling dripping ice-cream cones amid the honking cars. He moves with ease. It takes an experienced eye to notice that he?s in a wheelchair that is attached to his ice cream cart.

Local SEO for the Real Estate Agent ? Realtors on the Internet

Local SEO for the Real Estate?Agent

What is the difference between local SEO and SEO?? For the Agent it is the difference between optimizing your website locally rather than regionally or nationally. For example ?Florida Real Estate? versus ?Miami Waterfront Real Estate?.? For the Real Estate Agent getting more local, or as some call it ?hyper-local?, means focusing your efforts on a specific niche in your market.? The payoff is more qualified leads.

Let?s take a look at what you should consider when working on the SEO of your Real Estate Website.

1:? Keyword Research

Any good SEO campaign starts with keyword research.? I always use Google?s Keyword Tool.

To begin with select your first keyword or keyword phrase.? For this example I will use ?Real Estate in Miami Florida?.? I will also limit the results to within the United States. I also usually select ?Only show ideas closely related to my search terms? so you will get results with only your keywords in them?.

As you can see from the image below the main search term according to Google is a ?Medium Competitive? term.? This is good since you don?t want to be competing with the larger franchises or offices.? But within these results are some other good choices such as; ?real estate in Florida Miami? and ?real estate for sale in Miami Florida?.? If your results were too small you can then un-check the ?Only show ideas closely related to my search terms? and get results that are also related to you keywords.

2:? On Page Optimization

Once you select your keywords you then need to implement them into the webpage you are optimizing.? Using my example above you would need to place ?Real Estate in Miami Florida? in the following places;

  1. H1 Tag (title of your page/post)
  2. Title Tag (meta data)
  3. As close to the first words in your opening sentence as possible
  4. Lastly place them in the actual content of your website ? but don?t go overboard!? A good rule of thumb would be no more than 3-5 times per 500 words.

3:? Unique Content

I have said it a thousand times before ? content is the backbone of your website AND your SEO efforts.? Unique and well written content can do more for your website than anything else.? Creating consistently fresh content on your site will keep your visitors coming back to see what is new. A good post I wrote entitled Key Components of Web Content?SEO shows in more detail how good content is effective in writing webpages.

4: Backlinking

Getting people to backlink to your site is a fantastic way to show Google you are an authoritative source.? And one of the best ways to get people to backlink to you is to have good content.? Give them a reason why they want to backlink to you!

An important point to remember when building backlinks is to focus on quality over quantity. So make sure that the links pointing to your site are from reputable and related sites. A simple rule is this ? if a site complements your site but is not a direct competitor, then you should ask them for a link.

In my example above good backlinks could come from restaurants, attorneys, appraisers and local businesses in the Miami area.Don?t be shy about putting some outbound links on your website as well.? Good resource links to related information will make a good user experience for your visitors.

For more information on Back Links see my post SEO 101 ? Are Back Links Important to my?Blog?

So the next time you add a new page to your website keep these things in mind and hopefully this has given you some better knowledge of SERP?s (Search Engine Results Pages).

Auburn Riverside's Kayla Clarke signs with New Mexico Highlands

Auburn Riverside goalkeeper Kayla Clarke will continue her soccer career at New Mexico Highlands University next season.

Clarke, a senior at Auburn Riverside, was the Ravens' Most Valuable Player for her play between the pipes last season. She was named to the All-South Puget Sound League North 4A first-team and also was chosen to The News Tribune's All-Area team.

Clarke had five shutouts last season for Auburn Riverside, which finished the season 6-8-2.

Clarke also plays for the South Hill Soccer Club Revolution Black '93.

In addition to soccer, Clarke played goalkeeper for the Auburn Riverside girls water polo squad, where she helped lead the team to a fourth-place finish at the state tournament. She was awarded MVP as a junior and was an all-state first-leaguer.

"Kayla is a hard-working person who is technically sound in goal and has a good head on her shoulders," said New Mexico Highlands coach Justin Wager. "She carries herself well on and off the field and will be a good fit for our team in developing our young keeper talent."

New Mexico Highlands qualified for the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tourney last season, where it lost in the first round.

New Mexico Highlands is located in Las Vegas, N.M.

Bees 'self-medicate' when infected with some pathogens

Friday, March 30, 2012

Research from North Carolina State University shows that honey bees "self-medicate" when their colony is infected with a harmful fungus, bringing in increased amounts of antifungal plant resins to ward off the pathogen.

"The colony is willing to expend the energy and effort of its worker bees to collect these resins," says Dr. Michael Simone-Finstrom, a postdoctoral research scholar in NC State's Department of Entomology and lead author of a paper describing the research. "So, clearly this behavior has evolved because the benefit to the colony exceeds the cost."

Wild honey bees normally line their hives with propolis, a mixture of plant resins and wax that has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Domesticated honey bees also use propolis, to fill in cracks in their hives. However, researchers found that, when faced with a fungal threat, bees bring in significantly more propolis ? 45 percent more, on average. The bees also physically removed infected larvae that had been parasitized by the fungus and were being used to create fungal spores.

Researchers know propolis is an effective antifungal agent because they lined some hives with a propolis extract and found that the extract significantly reduced the rate of infection.

And apparently bees can sometimes distinguish harmful fungi from harmless ones, since colonies did not bring in increased amounts of propolis when infected with harmless fungal species. Instead, the colonies relied on physically removing the spores.

However, the self-medicating behavior does have limits. Honey bee colonies infected with pathogenic bacteria did not bring in significantly more propolis ? despite the fact that the propolis also has antibacterial properties. "There was a slight increase, but it was not statistically significant," Simone-Finstrom says. "That is something we plan to follow up on."

There may be a lesson here for domestic beekeepers. "Historically, U.S. beekeepers preferred colonies that used less of this resin, because it is sticky and can be difficult to work with," Simone-Finstrom says. "Now we know that this is a characteristic worth promoting, because it seems to offer the bees some natural defense."

The paper, "Increased resin collection after parasite challenge: a case of self-medication in honey bees?," was co-authored by Dr. Marla Spivak of the University of Minnesota and is available online from PLoS ONE. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation.
