Why Do Stay-at-Home Parents Need Their Own Credit Cards ...

I read an article last week on CNN Money with a premise that I found absolutely ridiculous.? The article covered a group of stay-at-home moms (parents?) who were protesting a portion of the Card Act that requires that credit issuers evaluate a credit applicant based on his/her individual income instead of household income.? The result was that some stay-at-home parents with good credit scores have been denied credit cards when they applied for them in only their names.

?

This situation plays in very well with our discussion of joint and separate money management as well as attitudes.? I would venture that the vast majority of stay-at-home parents have joint accounts and money with their working partners and are probably largely or fully supported by their spouses, and that is my assumption going forward with these comments.? My objection is that the protestors? position is logically inconsistent.? They want to apply for credit in just their own names, but they want their spouse?s income to be considered in support of their independent application.? Of course I think that the SAHPs should have access to credit, but to me it?s reasonable that the credit should be joint with the wage-earning spouse.

?

One protester (the spokesprotestor) is quoted as saying ?I think it?s demeaning ? I don?t want to ask my husband?s permission for a credit card.?? I have major issues with this statement ? this woman is either deceiving herself or has a communication problem in her marriage.? Depending on her husband for access to credit is the same thing as depending on him for money, which she must not find demeaning because she?s already doing it.? Or perhaps it?s the asking she finds demeaning, which I think says a lot more about the communication in her marriage than it does about the logic of this legislation change.

?

Remember, the issue is not access to money but access to credit ? as in, some bank?s money.? A creditor needs to have a reasonable expectation that an applicant will pay it back, which is why they do the credit score and income checks.? Without an income, how can they be sure that the account will be paid and whose wages can be garnished if it isn?t?? A spouse can?t be held liable for an account solely in the other spouse?s name, only the person issued the credit (unless they live in a community property state, which the spokesprotester does not).? In this case of non-income-generating SAHPs, there would be less recourse for the lending agency. So it makes sense to only consider the credit score and income of the applicant, not the applicant?s spouse.? Again, all these problems disappear if the applicant and spouse have fully embraced to a joint property mindset and accounting structure instead of playing these transitional/joint vs. individual games.

?

Frankly, what surprises me most is that people without incomes were granted their own credit lines before!? The creditor is choosing to lend money to someone who is, to be frank, unemployed.? Someone who is unemployed but has access to money could just use a debit card, you know.? They don?t have to borrow money to make purchases!

?

The protestors seem to want to turn this into some kind of womens? right?s/mommy wars issue.? (The spokesprotester again: ?Just because I don?t get a direct paycheck for [my work], doesn?t mean it?s not worthwhile work that I?m doing.?)? But the worth of parenting and housekeeping and everything else they do is not at issue, just their lack of paycheck!? I think that if these parents were secure in their contributions to their families, they wouldn?t find it ?demeaning? to ask their spouses to apply jointly for credit.? I don?t have any problems with single-earner families ? Kyle and I may very well be one at different points in our marriage.? But I think it?s silly to pretend that the non-income-earning spouse is not in many ways dependent on the income-earning spouse, which is what issuing individual credit lines to non-income-earning spouses is doing.

?

Who do you think is more right ? the Card Act or the protestors?? Do you think people should be given credit if they have low or no income?? Does anyone else feel like this was a practice exercise for the analytical section of the GRE?

Figure out what kind of link you?re going to utilize between the marketing methods you?re using to drive traffic to your site and the actual design of your site. Most people build their sites first without giving a single thought to how they?re going to get traffic. Search marketing is something that can greatly improve the rankings of your site with search engines. The design of your site must accommodate that though in order to make it work. The bottom line is that you need to plan for the way you?re going to market your site while you?re creating it. Breast Actives Keep some things in mind if you hope to attract lots of organic traffic via search engine results. If your SEO efforts aren?t focused, you risk losing any search engine rankings you might have achieved. Try not to put all your hopes into attracting traffic from just search engines. It?s a good idea to work on several ways to attract new visitors to your site. So then that takes us to marketing diversity, or not having all your eggs in one basket. There have been very many people who instantly lost their income due to something changing. If you?re smart, you can avoid this type of thing happening to you.

If you know right now that you want to promote affiliate products, then think seriously about making a review blog. Your review blog needs to be for affiliate products only though. Google doesn?t smile favorably upon affiliate marketing. With that in mind, there are a lot of affiliate review blogs that rank very well with Google. Google really seems to approve of blogs that are established and that do not promote Clickbank products. Yes, Google seems to really dislike Clickbank products for a lot of reasons. Private supply ship rockets toward space station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? A first-of-its-kind commercial supply ship rocketed toward the International Space Station following a successful liftoff early Tuesday, opening a new era of dollar-driven spaceflight.

The SpaceX company made history as its Falcon 9 rocket rose from its seaside launch pad and pierced the pre-dawn sky, aiming for a rendezvous in a few days with the space station. The unmanned rocket carried into orbit a capsule named Dragon that is packed with 1,000 pounds of space station provisions.

It is the first time a private company has launched a vessel to the space station. Before, that was something only major governments had done.

"Falcon flew perfectly!!" SpaceX's billionaire founder, Elon Musk, said via Twitter. "Dragon in orbit ... Feels like a giant weight just came off my back."

Musk later told reporters: "I feel very lucky ... For us, it's like winning the Super Bowl."

This time, the Falcon's nine engines kept firing all the way through liftoff. On Saturday, flight computers aborted the launch with a half-second remaining in the countdown; a bad engine valve was replaced.

The White House quickly offered congratulations.

"Every launch into space is a thrilling event, but this one is especially exciting," said John Holdren, President Barack Obama's chief science adviser. "This expanded role for the private sector will free up more of NASA's resources to do what NASA does best ? tackle the most demanding technological challenges in space, including those of human space flight beyond low Earth orbit."

Flight controllers applauded when the Dragon reached orbit nine minutes into the flight, then embraced one another once the solar panels on the spacecraft popped open. Many of the SpaceX controllers wore untucked T-shirts and jeans or even shorts, a stark contrast to NASA's old suit-and-tie shuttle crowd.

The hopes of SpaceX employees were riding on that rocket, Musk noted, and everyone felt "tremendous elation."

So did NASA.

The space agency is banking on the switch from government to commercial cargo providers in the U.S., now that the shuttles no longer are flying. Astronauts could begin taking commercial rides to the space station in three to five years, if all goes well.

"The significance of this day cannot be overstated," said a beaming NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. "It's a great day for America. It's actually a great day for the world because there are people who thought that we had gone away, and today says, 'No, we're not going away at all.'"

The real test comes Thursday when the Dragon reaches the vicinity of the space station. It will undergo practice maneuvers from more than a mile out. If all goes well, the docking will occur Friday. Musk will preside over the operation from the company's Mission Control in Hawthorne, Calif., where he monitored the liftoff.

The space station was zooming over the North Atlantic, just east of Newfoundland, when the Falcon took flight.

NASA is looking to the private sector to take over orbital trips in this post-shuttle period and several U.S. companies are vying for the opportunity. The goal is to get American astronauts launching again from U.S. soil ? creating jobs at home and halting the outsourcing, as Bolden put it.

Until their retirement last summer to museums, NASA's shuttles provided the bulk of space station equipment and even the occasional crew member. American astronauts are riding Russian rockets to orbit until SpaceX or one of its competitors takes over the job. Russia also is making periodic cargo hauls, along with Europe and Japan.

Musk, a co-creator of PayPal, founded SpaceX a decade ago. He's poured millions of his own money into the company, and NASA has contributed $381 million as seed money. In all, the company has spent more than $1 billion on the effort.

Hundreds of SpaceX and NASA guests poured into the launching area in the early morning hours Tuesday, eager to see firsthand the start of this new commercial era. The company had a single second to get its rocket flying, and that's all it needed.

Everyone, it seemed, was rooting for a successful flight ? even Musk's rivals.

"The shuttle may be retired, but the American dream of space exploration is alive and well," said Mark Sirangelo, chairman of Sierra Nevada Corp.'s space systems, which is developing a mini-shuttle to carry space station crews in another few years.

The six space station astronauts were especially enthusiastic. The crew beamed down a picture on the eve of the launch, showing the two who will use a robot arm to snare the Dragon.

In December 2010, SpaceX became the first private company to launch a spacecraft into orbit and retrieve it. That test flight of a Dragon capsule paved the way for this mission, which also is meant to culminate with a splashdown of the capsule in the Pacific.

This newest capsule is supposed to remain at the space station for a week before bringing back experiments and equipment. None of the other types of current cargo ships can return safely; they burn up on the way down.

SpaceX and NASA officials stress this is a demonstration flight and that even if something goes wrong, much can be learned. Two more Dragon supply missions are planned this year, regardless of what happens during this week's rendezvous.

While acknowledging the difficult course ahead in the next few days, Musk and NASA officials savored Tuesday's triumph.

"I would really count today as a success, no matter what happens the rest of the mission," Musk said.

Musk, 40, is the chief executive officer and chief designer for SpaceX. He also runs Tesla Motors, his electric car company.

Hitching a ride into space, aboard the discarded second stage of the rocket, were the ashes of more than 300 people, including Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper and "Star Trek" actor James Doohan, who played Scotty. It's a redo flight for a paying customer, Houston-based Celestis Inc. The Falcon 1 that carried the first batch of their ashes failed in 2008.

NASA Goddard delivers magnetometers for NASA's next mission to Mars

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) ? Magnetometers built by scientists and engineers at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. for NASA's Mars Atmosphere And Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission have been delivered to the University of California at Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory for integration into the Particles and Field Package.

"The team worked hard and completed delivery of the magnetometers on schedule," said Jack Connerney, Magnetometer Instrument Lead from NASA Goddard. "We are looking forward to launch, orbit insertion and seeing the data come back."

The pair of flux gate magnetometers measures the magnetic field at the location of the spacecraft. As part of the Particles and Fields Package, the magnetometer sensors are positioned at the outermost ends of the solar panels to keep them as far away as possible from stray magnetic fields generated by the spacecraft. Since the motion of escaping charged particles is governed by the magnetic field, this measurement is important in understanding how the solar wind interacts with the planet's atmosphere and causes loss to space.

"The geometry of the magnetic field determines where particles go to and where they come from," said Connerney."If we want to understand particle motion, we need to visualize how the magnetic field behaves throughout the Mars environment."

Scheduled for launch in late 2013, MAVEN will be the first mission devoted to understanding the martian upper atmosphere. The goal of MAVEN is to determine the history of the loss of atmospheric gases to space through time, providing answers about Mars climate evolution. By measuring the current rate of escape to space and gathering enough information about the relevant processes, scientists will be able to infer how the planet's atmosphere evolved in time.

The instrument is powered on during the spacecraft cruise to Mars. Once powered, it has a heart that beats once per second. Every second, the instrument sends a packet of data to the Particles and Fields Package. Each packet includes 32 vector samples of the magnetic field. The Particles and Fields Package accepts the data and passes it on to the spacecraft. The magnetic field vectors are also made available to the other instruments onboard the spacecraft in real time.

MAVEN's magnetometers were designed by a Goddard team that has a long and varied history with building magnetometers for space research. They have provided instruments for many previous and upcoming planetary and heliophysics missions.

The MAVEN spacecraft will carry three instrument suites. The Particles and Fields Package, built by the University of California at Berkeley with support from University of Colorado at Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (CU/LASP) and NASA Goddard, contains six instruments that will characterize the solar wind and the ionosphere of the planet. The Remote Sensing Package, built by CU/LASP, will determine global characteristics of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere. The Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer, provided by NASA Goddard, will measure the composition and isotopes of neutral ions.

"The magnetometer is the first of the science instruments to be completed and delivered," said Bruce Jakosky, MAVEN Principal Investigator from CU/LASP. "It's really exciting to see the payload now starting to come together. This is an important milestone in our path toward getting to Mars and using our measurements to answer questions about the history of the martian atmosphere."

NASA Goddard manages the project and is building two of the science instruments for the mission. In addition to the principal investigator coming from CU/LASP, the university provides science operations, is building science instruments, and leads education/public outreach. Lockheed Martin of Littleton, Colo., is building the spacecraft and is responsible for mission operations. The University of California at Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory is building science instruments for the mission. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., provides navigation support, the Deep Space Network, and the Electra telecommunications relay hardware and operations.

10 gadgets you'd be a fool to buy right now

4 hrs.

They say patience is a virtue, but like temperance and chastity, it?s not much fun. Unfortunately, if you want to reach a state of true techstasy, you may need to repress your desire to buy a new gadget today and wait for the next version to come out.

To be fair, sometimes now is the best time to buy a particular device and sometimes you drop your phone into a public toilet and have to replace it right away.?But when you buy that 3G phone a month before its hot new 4G replacement comes out, you might as well buy an ?I?m with stupid? T-shirt for your friends to wear when you go out together.

Here are 10 products you?d be a fool to buy today.

The iPhone

If you have your heart set on purchasing a new iPhone, don't do it yet. Every rumor points to the arrival of a much-improved product arriving by fall. We don't know what exact specs the iPhone 5 will have. We don't even know if it'll be called the iPhone 5 (my money's on "the Brand Spanking New iPhone"), but we can be pretty certain it will have 4G LTE, a faster processor, a better camera and a larger and sharper screen.?

While four or five months may seem like a long time to wait, most iPhone owners are on two-year phone contracts that usually won't allow them to upgrade until after 20 months. Do you really want to spend 2013 being known as the loser who has to "take a grenade" with Siri's older, slower moving sister while your friends cozy up to the new model?

More: What You Need to Know About the iPhone 5

Windows Tablets

Let's face the facts. If you want to buy a Windows 7 tablet, you're either a multitouch masochist or a sadistic CTO, looking to pinch-zoom in on employee suffering. ?Though Windows 7 runs all the applications you could ever want, its touch-unfriendly interface makes it really difficult to use with adult-sized fingers. Ever try tapping the X widget to close a window? You'll need to stick your index finger in a pencil sharpener first, so you can make sure it's thin enough.

Coming this fall, Windows 8 offers a very touch-friendly Metro UI and a host of touch-friendly apps on top of it. Even better, Windows 8 will run on ARM-based tablets, allowing for thinner, lighter and longer-lasting designs. A slew of new convertible notebooks that run Windows 8 will arrive this fall too. ?I can't wait for the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, which bends its hinge back 180 degrees to become a slate. Even Kanye West would sit in his seat long enough to wait for Windows 8.

More: 10 Ways Windows 8 Beats the iPad

Ultrabooks

The first generation of Ultrabooks ? a new category of uber-thin, fast-booting notebooks?? arrived last fall with prominent entries from all the PC vendors. However, though notebooks like the ASUS Zenbook UX31 and Toshiba Portege Z835 have a lot going for them, a new generation of much-improved Ultrabooks will arrive this summer. These notebooks will sport Intel's faster, more efficient third-generation Core Series processors (aka Ivy Bridge), and many will offer higher-resolution displays.

A couple of models stand out to us. The ASUS ZenBook Prime will offer a generous 1920 x 1080 screen that will let you watch HD movies at their native resolution, while viewing more of your favorite web pages and documents without scrolling. Meanwhile, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon could be the ultimate productivity notebook when it launches this summer. It will pack a gorgeous 14-inch, 1600 x 900 matte display into a .75-inch-thick chassis that weighs just 3 pounds. Plus, you'll get the industry's best keyboard.

Sprint Phones

Sprint likes to call itself "the Now Network," but it really should be named "the Promise Network," because right now all it is selling is the promise of 4G LTE at some point in the future. The carrier recently announced that it is dumping its mediocre 4G WiMAX network in favor of LTE on new handsets. That's the right move long-term, but it leaves current Sprint customers in a bind.

The company is selling 4G LTE phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper 4G LTE, but they'll only get a 3G signal until Sprint launches its new network. The carrier plans to roll out LTE this summer to just six cities ? Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio ? with no ETA for other cities apart from 123 million people covered by the end of the year.? Even if you live in one of the designated six markets, there's no guarantee that Sprint's implementation of LTE will be as fast as AT&T and Verizon's; we just don't know.

Whether you are already a Sprint customer or are just thinking of becoming one, you should wait to see how quickly the company's version of LTE is coming to your area and whether it actually lives up to the hype. You don't want to buy that Evo 4G LTE today, only to be stuck with 2007-era 3G speeds while your friends on Verizon and AT&T are cruising along at 4G.

MacBook Pros

If you have your heart set on an Apple MacBook Pro, tell your heart to go on without one for just a little longer. Everyone expects Apple to announce a new lineup of MacBook Pros in June and these new notebooks will reportedly weigh less, feature high-resolution "Retina" displays and provide USB 3.0 ports in addition to running Ivy Bridge CPUs. These notebooks will also be running Apple's new OS X Mountain Lion software, which brings more iPad-like functionality to Macs along with stronger security.

Unless a pack of rabid Windows fanboys breaks into your house and smashes your current MacBook Pro with a Metro-UI styled hammer, you can hold on for another few weeks. The Retina display, which should show more content on the screen at once, is reason enough to wait.

Android Tablets

Apple enthusiasts don't have anything to wait for when it comes to tablets. The "new" iPad just came out in March and has an incredible, high-res screen paired with a powerful processor. However, if you want to consider an Android tablet, now is not the time to buy.

Though we've seen some speedy quad-core tablets like the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, we're still waiting for Android tablet makers to come out with screens that have higher than 1280 x 800 resolution. Both ASUS and Acer have announced 1920 x 1200 tablets, but neither one has hit the market yet. If you plunk down $500 on a tablet now, you'll feel silly when the new HD models arrive within the next couple of months.

Smart TVs

Apple can play coy all it wants, but many industry insiders believe that the Cupertino company plans to launch its own TV later this year. There's no question that the Apple TV will have deep iTunes integration, a gorgeous screen (Apple is known for that) and some kind of Siri-based voice control.?

When it comes to launching new Smart TVs, Apple won't be alone. LG recently showed off its G2 Smart TV, which uses the Google TV 2.0 interface, supports voice commands and comes with a gesture-controlled "Magic" remote. Lenovo just began shipping its ?Android 4.0- powered K55 ?Smart TV in China and it may come here at some point as well. If you wait, the additional competition from these new products will force down prices on existing Smart TVs as well.

Windows Phones

The Nokia Lumia 900 has a gorgeous design and the HTC Titan II has an awesome 16-MP camera. However, when it comes to specs, apps and basic multitasking, Windows Phones still lag behind their Android and iPhone counterparts.?

With Windows Phone 8 due out this fall, Microsoft could finally start to close the feature gap with Apple and Google. According to some reports, the new mobile operating system will support higher resolution screens, dual-core CPUs, NFC payments and apps that can control other apps, a necessity for true multitasking.

Microsoft has issued some conflicting statements about whether current Windows Phones would get an OS upgrade so I wouldn't count on the Lumia you buy today running Windows 8 tomorrow. If you're attracted to Windows Phone, delay your purchase until fall. Otherwise, you'll be living with a single-core, low-res handset for two years.

eReaders

There are several great eReader options on the market right now, from the tablet-like Amazon Kindle Fire to the E Ink-powered Nook Simple Touch. However, as strong as the eReader offerings are today, they're about to get much better. Barnes & Noble just released its Simple Touch with GlowLight and rumor has it that Amazon is set to release its own backlit E Ink-based Kindle this summer.

However, backlit E Ink is just the tip of this innovative ice berg. Expect Amazon to launch the second-generation Kindle Fire 2 this fall, complete with higher-res screen options and possibly larger form factors like 8.9 inches. Flush with investment money from Microsoft and not content to stand still, Barnes & Noble is sure to release a new Nook Tablet sometime later this year as well. We'd expect the next Nook to also have a higher resolution than 1024 x 600.?

There's also a persistent rumor that Amazon will release Kindles using color E Ink later this year. We just reviewed the color E Ink-powered Ectaco Jetbook Color so the technology is already out there. How bad would you feel if you bought an old-school grayscale Kindle today, only to see one with a backlight or a color screen come out within a few months?

BlackBerrys

Research in Motion, the company that makes Blackberry phones, seems to be stuck in a time warp, offering phones that have the best specs of 2009, including single-core 800-MHz CPUs, tiny 2.4-inch screens and an ?outmoded BlackBerry 7 OS. Fortunately, most people aren't foolish enough to buy phones that you'd expect to find in the bargain bin at a garage sale rather than the shelf at a Verizon store.?

RIM seems to understand the problem, too, and it plans to release an entirely new line of phones running its new BlackBerry 10 OS later this year. The new touch-friendly BlackBerry London phone, complete with a bigger screen and faster processor than we've seen on a BlackBerry before, should arrive by fall. If you must have a BlackBerry, this is the one to wait for.

Elder care Or senior care OR healthcare More Details about Elder care Or senior care OR healthcare here.

The decision to send your parents to a senior care facility such as Michigan home care can be a difficult one, especially if family members are unsure whether or not their parents are ready to be moved to senior care. The senior's feelings are important, but they may not want to admit that they can no longer take care of themselves. Adult children tend to see their parents in the same light as they saw them as children and may have a difficult time accepting that their parents need help.

Some people move their aging parents into their homes rather than sending them to senior care, but this arrangement can be hard on the whole family. Parents who are used to taking care of their children may have trouble accepting help from their children. It often causes more stress on the family for parents to move in with their children than it does for the parents to move to a senior care facility.

People are ready to move to a senior care facility such as Michigan Senior Care when they are unable to cook for themselves or take their medication on schedule. They may tell their children that they are eating, but have the same food sitting in their refrigerator going bad. They may have extra pills left in the bottle at the end of the month and not know when they forgot to take them. People who are ready for a senior care facility such as Michigan Elder Care often fall or bump into things and get bruises.

Elderly people who are no longer able to drive often benefit from living in a care facility because they won't have to worry about bothering their children or other family members when they need to go grocery shopping or have a doctor appointment. Some seniors purposely skip doctor appointments because they don't want to trouble anyone else with transporting them to the appointment and back home again. Avoiding doctor appointments often causes treatable medical conditions to worsen considerably.

Many people who need senior care such as Michigan Home Health Care are unable to take care of themselves physically. Their children may notice that their clothing is dirty or that they wear the same clothing for several days in a row. They may also notice that their hair is uncombed and their house is not as clean as it used to be. These are signs that the parent needs to be in a senior care facility to get help every day with bathing, laundry, cooking, taking pills and other necessities of life.

Seniors need as much attention as babies. The big difference is that seniors tend to be more independent. Some seniors don?t feel like help is necessary at all. We have the answers for both situations! Our caregivers help with chores of the house and the care of your elder. Whether your elder needs more attention than others, we have the right person for you. http://michiganhomecareassistance.com/

Oliver Cooper Wants You To Help Make Him The 'Best Onscreen Dirtbag'

Hooray for Movie Awards season and the cutthroat competition between this year's very deserving group of nominees! And although the majority of the nominations were snagged by some popular wizards, bridesmaids and tributes, there is plenty of Movie Awards love and Golden Popcorn to go around. Kinda. Speaking of Movie Awards love, we have to [...]
