The Object Oriented Life: Top 7 tips for succeeding in a technical ...

In this post I would like to write on how to succeed in a technical interview based on my experience as an interviewer. Most of the interviews follows some patterns. If you understand it and frame your response in the same way you can clear any interview. If you don't know stuff this might not help you, but if you are prepared, this article will help you show of your full potential.

If you are skillful the only reason you can loose an interview is by lack of preparation. You may know all the stuff but you still needs to prepare by reading books, article etc.. Theses may not teach you anything new but will help in organizing things that you already know. Once you have organized information it is really easy to access it. You should read not only for interviews, make it a practice and get better at your job.

Most of the time interviewer is looking for a candidate who can work with him. The vacancy may be?in other teams but they use this parameter to judge. Mostly this article contains general tips. These are targeted for 2 to 6 years experienced candidates.

1. Be honest and?don't bluff

Answer what you know, confidently. If you have been asked a question that you don't know, Start by telling "I am not sure, but I think It is .....". Never tell a wrong answer confidently. That will make them doubt your correct answers also or may feel that they were guesses. You can't use this technique for every question, but I would think 25% is a good amount. Most importantly this shows your ability to think and a never die attitude. No one wants to work with people says "I can't do this". Try to do some thing about all the questions.

2. Be ready to write Code

If you are been asked to write some code, be careful and follow some basic standards. I heard people telling me "I forgot the syntax..." and this for the syntax of a for loop. No one expect you to remember everything but basics like looping, if conditions, main method, exceptions are never to be forgotten. If you did, brush them up. Always write the code with good indentation using lots of white spaces. That might make up for your bad handwriting!!

3. Get ready to explain about your project

As engineers you have to understand the?business before you start code it. So you should be able to explain what is being done in your project. Write down 3-4 lines that will explain the project in high level. By hearing the lines some one out side your team should get an idea about it. Because we always works inside on features, most of the time it is difficult to frame these. Check your client's internal communications how they are marketing and get some clue from it. Practice what your are going to say with friends make make sure you are on to the point.

Once you have explained about the business needs then you will be asked about the?technical?architecture of the project. You have to be prepared with a architecture diagram that shows how the interaction of components in your project. It don't have to be in any specific UML format, but make sure you can explain stuff relating to the diagram you have drawn. For example if you are working in a web application show how the data is flow?from UI to DB. You can show different?layers?involved, technologies used etc.. The most important part is you should be clear in your mind about what you are currently working on.?

4. Convert?arguments?to conversation

Even if you know that that person is wrong do not argue and try to continue the conversation saying "Ok, But I am not so sure if that is correct, I will check that out". This keeps the person in good terms. Be an active listener during the interview use reference to your?experience when you are answering.?

5.?Be prepared for the WHY question

Good interviews focus on the question "Why?". It might start with "What" but will end in "Why?". For example in Java typical question would be "What is the difference between String and StringBuffer?". A follow-up why question will be like "Why is String has so-and-so" or "How is it done..?". Be ready to give inside?information?by answering "How?" and "Why" parts of he question.

6.?Tell about your best achievement

During your work there might be something that you consider as your best?achievement. It is important to describe it in such a way that interviewer feels that you have did something extraordinary there. So, prepare a believable story on how your abilities helped you complete that task. It is important to prepare this because it takes time to dig your memory and find situations.

7.?Do you have any questions for me?

This question gets repeated in every single interview. Here you?don't actually care about the answers; but you should make yourselves look good by asking "smart" questions. This?article?will help you in this.

Baseball Umpires Blow Another Call, MLB Stays In Denial

Last night, an umpire in the Yankees-Tigers playoff series blew a call at first base that cost the Yankees a run.

It wasn't a "close" call or a "judgement" call. It was an incorrect call. Every replay showed that clearly:

Today, an umpire in the Yankees-Tigers playoff series blew a call at second base that eventually cost the Yankees two runs (by not ending the inning).

It wasn't a "close" call or a "judgement" call. It was an incorrect call. Every replay showed that clearly. (See below):

We haven't heard from MLB boss Bud Selig's office yet about these latest blown calls, but we're sure we know what he'll say:

"They're part of the game."

Well, yes, they are. And that's the problem.

Forty years ago, when TV replays were fuzzy and distant and there were legitimate questions about whether calls were right or wrong, it was defensible to say that blown calls were "part of the game."

Not anymore.

Now, blown calls are just part of an archaic ritual defended by absurdly intransigent management team who has apparently never had to endure the hell of having a blown call cost their team a game.

Blown calls aren't good for anyone.

They aren't good for the players.

They aren't good for the fans.

They aren't good for the umps (who have to live with them even when they get home and see clearly that they blew it).

And they aren't good for baseball.

Someday, perhaps, the management of MLB will enter the 21st Century and realize that.

Until then, maybe we should all just watch football.

Koch brothers warn employees of layoffs if Obama re-elected

Romney campaigning in Florida (Justin Sullivan/Getty)

Koch Industries, the Wichita, Kan.-based company run by the billionaire Koch brothers, sent a voter information packet to 45,000 employees of its Georgia Pacific subsidiary earlier this month.

In it was a letter, dated Oct. 1, from Koch Industries president Dave Robertson implicitly warning that "many of our more than 50,000 U.S. employees and contractors may suffer the consequences" of voting for President Obama and other Democrats in the 2012 elections, a list of conservative candidates the company's political action committee endorses and a pair of editorials: one, by David Koch, supporting Mitt Romney, and the other, by Charles Koch, condemning Obama.

"While we are typically told before each Presidential election that it is important and historic, I believe the upcoming election will determine what kind of America future generations will inherit," Robertson's letter--first published by InTheseTimes.com--begins. "If we elect candidates who want to spend hundreds of billions in borrowed money on costly new subsidies for a few favored cronies, put unprecedented regulatory burdens on businesses, prevent or delay important new construction projects, and excessively hinder free trade, then many of our more than 50,000 U.S. employees and contractors may suffer the consequences, including higher gasoline prices, runaway inflation, and other ills. This is true regardless of what your political affiliation might be."

Robertson's letter continued:

(In These Times)

To help you engage in the political process, we have enclosed several items in this packet. For most of you, this includes information about voter registration deadlines and early voting options for your state. At the request of many employees, we have also provided a list of candidates in your state that have been supported by Koch companies or by the KOCHPAC, our employee political action committee.

I want to emphasize two things about these lists. First, and most important, we believe any decision about which candidates to support is -- as always -- yours and yours alone, based on the factors that are most important to you. Second, we do not support candidates based on their political affiliation. We evaluate them based on who is the most market-based and willing to support economic freedom for the benefit of society as a whole.

If you are concerned about our economy, our future and enhancing the quality of life for all Americans, then I encourage you to consider the principles of your candidates and not just their party affiliation. It is essential that we are all informed and educated voters. Our future depends on it.

It's not the first time Koch Industries has sent employees political packets. Just before the 2010 midterm elections, Koch sent staffers an urgent mailer that the Nation said was "full of alarmist right-wing propaganda."

Last week, David Siegel, the founder and CEO of Florida-based Westgate Resorts, sent an email to employees informing them that layoffs are likely if Obama is reelected:

It's quite simple. If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company. Rather than grow this company I will be forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less opportunity for everyone.

So, when you make your decision to vote, ask yourself, which candidate understands the economics of business ownership and who doesn't? Whose policies will endanger your job? Answer those questions and you should know who might be the one capable of protecting and saving your job. While the media wants to tell you to believe the "1 percenters" are bad, I'm telling you they are not. They create most of the jobs. If you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the "1%"; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country.

As Gawker noted, Siegel and his wife were the subjects of "The Queen of Versailles," a recent documentary "about their ongoing quest to build the largest house in America." And Siegel has often claimed credit for George W. Bush's victory over Al Gore in the 2000 presidential race. ("I had my managers do a survey on every employee [8,000 total]," Siegel told Bloomberg BusinessWeek. "If they liked Bush, we made them register to vote. But not if they liked Gore.")

Siegel and the Koch brothers are not alone in issuing anti-Obama missives to employees. According to MSNBC, Arthur Allen, chief executive of ASG Software Solutions, wrote a similar email to his staffers on Sept. 30:

Many of you have been with ASG for over 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years. As you know, together, we have been able to keep ASG an independent company while still growing our revenues and customers. But I can tell you, if the US re-elects President Obama, our chances of staying independent are slim to none. I am already heavily involved in considering options that make our independence go away, and with that all of our lives would change forever. I believe that a new President and administration would give US citizens and the world the renewed confidence and optimism we all need to get the global economies started again, and give ASG a chance to stay independent. If we fail as a nation to make the right choice on November 6th, and we lose our independence as a company, I don't want to hear any complaints regarding the fallout that will most likely come.

In the email, Allen added: "I am asking you to give us one more chance to stay independent by voting in a new President and administration on November 6th."

Campaigners in Toyko Call for End of Harmful Tax Policies ? Task ...

TOKYO -?As the IMF and World Bank pursue implementation of tax policies in developing countries, members of Civil Society worry that these powerful institutions are putting the interests of international investors above those of the democratic governments of developing countries.

Of particular concern is the World Bank?s influential ?Doing Business? ranking which many development experts find particularly damaging.

?The rankings are based upon criteria that might boost the bottom line of foreign investors but often damage national fiscal policies and hamper efforts to increase domestic resources through taxation?, said ?ygunn Sundsb? Brynildsen, Senior Policy Analyst at the European Network on Debt and Development (EURODAD).

?The World Bank?s ?Doing Business? ranking pushes countries to lower taxes on corporations, reduce funds for vital public investment in health and education and often forces them to seek revenue elsewhere. It has caused more harm than good and we hope the Bank?s ongoing review of the rankings will result in their discontinuation? Brynildsen added.

Although generally encouraged by the IMF?s growing recognition of the equity effects of tax policies, campaigners in Tokyo expressed dissatisfaction that Value Added Tax (VAT) continues to be seen as a main source of tax revenues. ?We are surprised that both the World Bank and the IMF continue to push VAT despite its clearly regressive nature,? said Pooja Rangaprasad of India?s Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability. ?Ultimately, it is impossible to dispute the fact that VAT is a heavy tax burden on the poor.?

A further issue of concern to tax campaigners is the continued practice by the World Bank?s International Finance Corporation (IFC) of channeling its investments through secrecy jurisdictions. ?Tax havens are being used to rob developing countries of much needed tax revenue by facilitating tax dodging. Development finance institutions?like the IFC should be the first to discontinue the practice?, said Brynildsen.

Tax revenue for developing countries is a crucial source of independently generated income and as such campaigners feel its importance cannot be exaggerated. Given their influential role in forming national and international fiscal policies, campaigners believe it would be very counterproductive to its development mandate if the World Bank and IMF were unable to stop pushing tax policies that hinder efforts by developing countries to increase local economies and establish greater financial independence.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad Finally Has To Pay Up | Lem Fugitt - International Business Consulting

Rich Dad Poor Dad author files for bankruptcy Money TODAY com 1

It appears that fate has finally caught up with Robert Kiyosaki, though he?s trying to wiggle through Chapter 7 bankruptcy apparently to avoid having to pay the piper all they are due. Kiyosaki, the most well-known and most vocal advocate of using any means necessary to put other people?s money to work for you, recently lost a court judgement for close to $24 million dollars ? money he owed but never paid to The Learning Annex, the company that originally organised his speaking engagements and platform.

According to Bill Zander, the founder and chairman of The Learning Annex:

?Oprah believed in him, and Will Smith believed in him, but he didn?t keep his promise to us.??

? Fortune magazine weighed in with a harsh, but well deserved, critique of Kiyosaki?s malarkey:

?tips ran the gamut from ridiculous to illegal and downright hurtful and included advocating for insider trading, arguing for the purchase of multiple real estate properties with little or no money down and telling followers they could purchase stocks on margin via unfunded brokerage accounts.??

Sprint bringing LTE to San Francisco and over 20 more cities 'in coming months'

We can't say we're exactly surprised Sprint would be bringing its 4G LTE waves to one of the biggest markets on the West Coast, but there's nothing like hearing it straight from the horse's carrier's mouth. Earlier today, Sprint announced its developing Long Term Evolution network will be hitting San Francisco (and some surrounding areas) in the "coming months." That's not it, however, as the Now Network also let it be known that it will be flipping the switch in more than 20 other new markets, including Fort Wayne, IN, Emporia, KS, Greenwood, MS, Joplin, MO as well as Napa and Petaluma in California. At this very moment, it's unclear what Sprint's definition of "in coming months" is, but at least folks living around these areas now have some reassurance that they, too, will be enjoying some faster speeds on one of those LTE-equipped devices. The full list of lucky markets can be found inside the presser below.

WHY IT MATTERS: Debt

The issue:

A sea of red ink is confronting the nation and presidents to come.

The budget deficit ? the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects in taxes and fees? is on track to top $1 trillion for the fourth straight year. When there's not enough to pay current bills, the government borrows, mostly by selling interest-bearing Treasury bonds, bills and notes to investors and governments worldwide. It now borrows about 40 cents of every dollar it spends.

The national debt refers to the total amount the federal government owes; the deficit is just a one-year slice.

The U.S. has been borrowing since the 1700s, when it needed money to finance the American Revolution. The outstanding debt has since risen to a shade over $16 trillion. While there's plenty of finger-pointing by politicians over who's to blame, deficits historically surge during wars and deep recessions, and the U.S. has had both in the past decade.

___

Where they stand:

President Barack Obama has proposed bringing deficits down by slowing spending gradually, to avoid suddenly tipping the economy back into recession. To help, he would raise taxes on households earning more than $250,000 annually and impose a surcharge of 30 percent on those making more than $1 million.

He acknowledges his spending on recession-fighting stimulus, tax relief and bailout programs ? much of it started under President George W. Bush ? has contributed to the deficit. But so have bipartisan agreements to extend Bush-era tax cuts, and paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also raising deficits: a drop in tax revenues as more people found themselves out of work and personal and corporate incomes that sagged in the deepest downturn since the Great Depression.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney would lower deficits mostly through deep spending cuts, including some of the reductions proposed by his conservative running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee. But many of the cuts they're pushing would be partially negated by their proposals to lower top tax rates on both corporations and individuals.

___

Why it matters:

Deficits and debt are important because it's never good to spend more than you make for too long. The party out of power always makes deficits a big issue against the one holding the White House ? as Democrats did in 2008 and Republicans are doing now.

Leaders of both parties agree the burden will become unsustainable if borrowing is not reined in while interest obligations keep rising. But huge policy differences exist over how to balance the budget or at least trim deficits to manageable levels ? whether through spending cuts, tax increases or a mix.

Obama and Democrats tend to favor a combination, while Republicans mostly want just spending cuts, although Romney and Ryan say they'd also end some tax deductions and close loopholes ? without specifying which ones.

Congress sets a ceiling on how much the government can borrow. If this debt limit is breached, the government will default on its obligations. This has never happened, but it almost did last summer in a Capitol Hill standoff. As a consequence, the nation's credit rating was downgraded for the first time ever.

The current $16.4 trillion debt limit will be reached late this year or early next. A slew of tax breaks will expire at the same time.

No matter who wins, he'll immediately have his hands full.

Love Is A Feeling

Love Is A Feeling

The long hallway to the ICU Unit is stripped down.? There isn?t any decoration or furniture to relieve your gaze.? Without distraction I could feel my heart grow emptier and then fill with apprehension.? The universe does not like a vacuum I thought and quickly fills the empty spaces.?? I had been having such a wonderful day until this long walk to a unsure destination.

The call came around 7am just as I was leaving early to work.? I had planned on exercising and getting a tune up for my body.? Holding the receiver to my ear I heard the words ?Will you go with me today to see John?? He is in the ICU and they don?t think he will make it through the night.?

When we arrived at John?s room they were preparing to move him to a regular room.? The nurse announced this news with a large warm smile.? Come see him in his new room in an hour.

We saw John later that day.? He seemed to recognize my friend.? They knew each other since childhood. My friend took his hand and told him she loved him and that time will heal all.? It wasn?t the words in that moment but the feeling of love.? The love that went between them was thick and full like sweet cream.? You hear that words don?t teach and this was an example of something that went beyond the words and swirled around the room.? The nurse came in then and she too filled with a radiance of that palatable energy that filled the room.

John came to be in the hospital because of advanced alcoholism.? He had been homeless and lived on the streets for sometime.? He had tried treatments but nothing had worked and he continued to drink and use drugs.? Another friend had told me that she had known others who had lived this life of survival and had transformed against all odds that anything would work for them.? They now live their lives in a state of gratefulness and help others.

After our visit I took my friend home.? Her mother was there and asked about John.? When we told her that he looked better and was improving, she remarked ?What a wasted life?.? I thought about that remark as I was driving home.

His life was not one I would choose but I can only see his life today from the perspective of what I saw and felt today.

  1. I witnessed love
  2. I felt love so full it was sweet
  3. Apprehension was transformed to a moment of love
  4. There is always hope when there is love and time will heal all.
  5. A day lived with love is a very good day.

Love is a feeling always flowing, always available, always willing to find you despite criticism, judgement, alcoholism, homeless, and any thing else that might be in your current life. ?We are energetic beings always attracting what we are experiencing. ?By learning more about how to become a deliberate creator of your experience, you will get more of what you want and less of what you don?t want. ?How you might ask?

Become aware of what you are currently thinking and feeling?this is key

Look for the better feeling thought?you are soothing to reach higher more desirable thoughts

Find events, experiences, that match that better feeling and celebrate the new feelings

  • Your words create your thoughts

  • Your thoughts create your mood and feelings

  • Your mood and feelings create your results

  • Your results can be either positive or negative depending on your current words, thoughts, feelings

NEBOSH at Work | Free Directory Listings in Australia - Business ...

The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) is an independent awards agency for qualifications in health, safety and environmental practice and management, and has been keeping workers safe for over thirty years.

Universally recognised

Whatever kind of business you are involved in, from primary industry to a small office environment, we have a qualification to suit you. Our 400 certified training providers have already provided certification to 180,000 people in 33 countries

Many professional membership bodies (e.g. the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) recognise NEBOSH accreditation, and NEBOSH is ISO 9001 certified, and holds Investors in People Status.

Note that NEBOSH is the examining board providing syllabi and practical coursework exams, and although they don?t directly provide training, all course providers must be NEBOSH certified.

Qualification Levels

Three grades of qualification are awarded by NEBOSH: Award, Certificate and Diploma. A Diploma indicates professional knowledge of the subject, and an Award indicated a good introductory knowledge.

Health and Safety risk assessments

Whatever kind of business you are involved in, you are required to carry out health and safety risk assessments, to let the government assess how safe an environment you are providing for your staff. It can be difficult to know what to do when beginning as an employer, so keep these five steps in mind when carrying out your own workplace risk assessment: Firstly, identify any clearly dangerous aspects of your working environment. Secondly, determine who may be affected by said dangerous aspects of your working environment. Thirdly you must decide upon the degree of danger involved, by looking at the chances of someone having an accident involving the problems outlined in steps one and two, and decide how severe these accidents might be. Fourthly, identify any existing protocols in place to minimise the risk of said dangerous aspect, and finally, record all of this in a suitably presented form.

Dangers of an Office Environment

Offices often can seem safe. Just because there are no power tools and no heavy machinery most people assume that offices are risk free, since surely the risks associated with a desk job pale in comparison to those associated with industry?

This is not strictly true. Although it is safe to say that you are under less risk in an office than on a busy factory floor, it is untrue to say that there are no risks present to your staff in an office environment.

Health and safety risk assessments are required by law and with so many accidents in the workplace happening every day it is no wonder. Your employees have a right to work in a safe environment, and filling in risk assessment forms is the best way to keep track of this.

We are a first class UK based provider of health and safety courses which include NEBOSH. If you have any queries or wish to find out more about RRC please go to our web site.

UMass Amherst neuroscientist Luke Remage-Healey will receive the 2012 Frank A. Beach Award from the Society for Behavioral Endocrinology for work showing exceptional promise and significant contributions in the field of behavioral neuroendocrinology

AMHERST, Mass. UMass Amherst neuroscientist Luke Remage-Healey will receive the 2012 Frank A. Beach Award from the Society for Behavioral Endocrinology for work showing exceptional promise and significant contributions in the field of behavioral neuroendocrinology. Named after a founder of the field, the award will be presented during the society's annual meeting this week in New Orleans. Remage-Healey will also give a lecture at the society's annual meeting next year.

Society president Jeffrey Blaustein, who is also director of the UMass Amherst Center for Neuroendocrine Studies, announced the honor. He wrote, "I am delighted to announce this, both as president of the society and as Luke's colleague. This is a prestigious award and a well-deserved, terrific honor."

Remage-Healey, an assistant professor of psychology, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and leads behavioral physiology research in zebra finches, in particular how steroid hormones regulate brain function and behavior. "We've been studying two concepts in neuroendocrinology and how they intersect," he says. "One is that hormones like estrogens can have very rapid effects on the brain and on behavior in males as well as females. The second is that estrogens are produced in the brain. This award signifies that the link between these ideas is solidifying and gathering mainstream momentum."

Remage-Healey calls UMass Amherst's neuroendocrine studies program "a vibrant center" for such work, and says he is honored to stand beside other researchers who have won the Beach Award. "The Society has always placed a significant emphasis on what we can learn from so-called comparative model systems like frogs, birds and fish, beyond the traditional lab mice and rats. Breakthroughs come from many unexpected directions."

He and colleagues study these phenomena in songbirds using a variety of technical approaches including microdialysis, electrophysiology, immunocytochemistry and neuropharmacology. Songbirds offer a unique model system in which brain steroid production is widespread and especially pronounced, and where development and expression of a suite of social behaviors is accessible in the lab and natural environments.

"The Beach Award lectures provide a fascinating look at the different paths people have taken in the field. Past lectures have offered new insight at the intersection of behavior, neurobiology and endocrinology. I'm really thrilled to be carrying on that tradition." says Remage-Healey.

Hartford Metro Area Ranks Last In Report On Turnover In Homes For ...

Sales of single-family houses and condominiums are picking up in the Hartford metro area but not enough to make much of a dent in the properties on the market, a new study today says.

The Hartford metro area saw just a 4.6 percent overall decline in inventory compared with a year ago, ranking it dead last when ranked among the country?s 101 largest metro areas for declines in inventory by zillow.com, the real estate tracking firm.

The Hartford metro area includes Hartford, Tolland and Middlesex counties. Each of those counties saw year-over-year increases in sales of single-family houses and condos in August, according to The Warren Group.

Nationally, inventory levels fell 19.4 percent. The Fresno, Calif. metro area saw the biggest decline, at 49.4 percent.

Inventory levels are watched closely as indicator of recovery following a recession. Fewer properties on the market typically increase competition among buyers and push up prices they are willing to pay, especially for properties in the best locations and with the most updates

A recent report by the Greater Hartford Association of Realtors painted a somewhat brighter picture of the area?s inventory. The 57-town area tracked by the association does not line up perfectly with zillow?s county analysis, but the association covers many towns in the three counties.

In August, the number of single-family houses on the market fell by 6 percent on a year-over-year basis, even with a one-percent increase in new listings.

Based on the number of closed sales in August and the 6,598 houses for sale at the end of the month, there is a little over a seven-month supply of houses on the market. That?s still a buyer?s market, but barely ? a six-month supply is said to favor neither buyer nor seller.

Raleigh, NC??Artist Frank Poor?s interest in architecture ? and more specifically, the changing southern landscape ? began when his childhood home, Woodstock, GA, once a small town of approximately 500 people, experienced a boom in the 1970s and 80s. Buildings went up and the town grew to 30,000 residents seemingly overnight. Contemporary structures replaced old, historic architecture.?The rural built environment that had grown organically and over time to reflect local needs was replaced with homogenous contemporary structures that bore no relationship to place.

Much of what Poor viewed as meaningful was torn down and replaced. In most cases, the new homes and businesses were transitory. For Poor, the growth became equated with impermanence, characterized by dated construction built with cheap materials.

Small towns across the country can tell tales similar to the one Poor experienced in Woodstock.?These towns, particularly those in the southeastern United States, have become central to Poor?s recent mixed-media works. The three-dimensional basswood sculptures presented in?Traces, use the language of southern vernacular architecture (through both form and photographic imagery) to explore memory and loss.

Though originally trained as a sculptor, photography has become the foundation for much of Poor?s recent work. In 2009, when he began his current series, he predominantly relied on found or historic photographs. More recently however, he shoots his own images. Though Poor currently lives in Rhode Island all of the photographic imagery in?Traces?was taken in the southeast, namely Georgia, where Poor was raised, and Alabama. Capturing his own photographs allows Poor to more aptly portray his vision of a particular moment in time and place.

The process of finding or shooting photographs is a method by which Poor gathers information ? research to aid in his investigations. He notes, ?photographs are bits of evidence;? they are artifacts that suggest a narrative, but only tell part of the story. As an artist, it is his job to extrapolate upon these photographs, and pull together all of the fragments to develop a comprehensive vision. The photographs are just one component, one tactic, in communicating his idea. The images, at times printed onto wood veneers (cherry, knotty pine, birch, etc.), and more recently printed onto transparencies, are incorporated into three-dimensional architectural forms that Poor constructs of square basswood dowels. The pieces range in scale from as small as nine inches to as large as seven feet. Most of the forms hang on the wall, though larger works are placed on the gallery floor.

Artist Biography

Frank Poor was born in Woodstock, GA, in1962. He earned his BFA from Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, and his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI.

His work has been widely exhibited including in recent solo exhibitions at the Newport Art Museum; Welch Gallery at Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA; and at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum.

10: A Very Special Interview | The Dr. O Show

This Sunday, my family and I will be participating in the Ron Santo Walk to cure juvenile diabetes 2012 on the Chicago lakefront. We have done this for the past seven years ? ever since we moved back to Chicago from Springfield. My daughter, Grace, developed type I diabetes just after she had turned 2. In fact, I was already in Springfield doing my fellowship in hand and microsurgery, when I came back to visit the family for a weekend in preparation for their move down to the Land of Lincoln. They were packed and ready to go the next week down to Springfield. It was all going to be a great adventure, and we were all very excited about the prospects. But the weekend when I came down, Grace was not feeling so well, and so we took her to the doctor, and a urine dipstick analysis revealed that she had a large amount of sugar in her urine. She had diabetes, and my wife and I were devastated.

This is a great movie if you want to learn about Ron Santo, and his career and as a Chicago Cub, as well as his struggle with diabetes. It is inspirational?even if you are White Sox fan like me! Click on the image to get it on Amazon!

We took her to Children?s Memorial Hospital where she was admitted and stayed for about a week. She eventually recovered, and we did go down to Springfield. It was not a particularly easy year in many regards. We were far from our families. I was working very hard, and my wife had to put her residency on hold in order to take care of Grace. But in spite of these difficulties and challenges, we were able to survive and ultimately thrive as a family, and really, before we knew it, I was done with my fellowship in hand and microsurgery, and we were ready to go back to Chicago!

And in the fall of that year, we did our first JDRF walk. And ever since that time we have looked forward to this event because it?s really a wonderful event a beautiful place for meaningful and important cause ? especially in my life.

So today, I wanted to share an interview that I did with my daughter, Grace, and let her talk a little bit about what is like to have type I diabetes. I hope you find it both interesting and informative.

In the next portion of the podcast I talk about the controversy that has been occurring with Omega-3 fish oils ? specifically that recent studies have suggested that they are largely ineffective as supplements. I?ve looked at the study, and of course, it?s one of those observational studies that looks at one particular thing ? taking Omega-3 fish oils ? without necessarily looking at subgroups of people who take them, specifically those who are still eating tons of carbohydrates in the form of wheat and sugar, as well as those who were still eating Omega-6 oils in the form of industrial seed oil. In this segment, I talk about looking at the big picture.

In my health and wellness practice, which includes The Man Diet, as well and counseling for women, I use Omega-3 supplements that I have in my office. If you are in Chicago, come see me! If not, then make sure you supplement with high-quality supplements?Nordic Naturals are a high quality Omega-3. Click on the image if you want to buy them from Amazon.

In the final segment of the podcast I answer a question that I have been posed several times in the course of writing my blogs and podcasts, etc. which is: how people react in the medical community might tell about low carbohydrate diets? Well, the fact of the matter is I don?t tell them because many that I have told are skeptical. They really honestly believe that a low-fat, low cholesterol, high carbohydrate, high healthy whole grain diet is the way to go, when in fact, it seems for the majority of people, this is not only a diet that doesn?t help you lose weight but one that encourages weight gain over the long term.

So, I don?t necessarily waste much time trying to convince doctors who have been practicing for 40 years under the low-fat paradigm. That?s one of the funny things about ?doing something.? Whenever you do something, whether it works or not, if you are personally successful at it you feel like you are an expert at some level. And that?s unfortunate because you don?t necessarily leave your mind open to alternate/competing hypotheses. And for some, this expertise often becomes a privileged viewpoint where a principled objection is not seriously considered. It?s actually not a privilege viewpoint ? it?s a blind spot.

That?s why I always try to repeat the fact that as a doctor, I am always first, a teacher ? that is the Latin root of the word! And as a teacher, I am always a continual learner because the best teachers do continually learn. And who do they learn from? Well there?s no doubt that books are important, because they help codify knowledge and principles, but I feel that the central source of learning in terms of medicine comes from people, specifically patients.

Patients of taught me so much, and many times they have completely contradicted what I?ve learned in standard books. As a result of contradictory evidence and information that I have gotten from direct patient contact, I had to go back to books to see why this is so. The reason is simply because human metabolism is very dynamic, and although some people can thrive in a low-fat diet, most do better on a low carbohydrate high-fat diet.

To be clear, there is no one-size-fits-all diet. And the great thing about people who believe in low-carb, like me, is that we are the first to admit it in no uncertain terms. I believe in individualization based on the specific needs of a given patient ? most doctors do? in theory. But when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of crumpling up some of their conventional wisdom and tossing it in the intellectual wastebasket, that is a different matter altogether the most doctors are not inclined to do.

And that is why I don?t necessarily spend a lot of time trying to convince people about a low carbohydrate high-fat diet because in order to do this, I have to first become a psychologist! I have to explain to them why they?re thinking may be wrong and why they?re relying a bad thought process which is ultimately resulting in bad decisions. But nobody likes this. Especially any expert who believes they are functioning at a privileged position of knowledge. They don?t like to be told that what they are confusing as a privileged position of knowledge is actually a blind spot.

So this is why I focus on patients, and I try to achieve objective results treating patients. This is the most important thing as a doctor.

Enjoy the podcast!
