Expo promotes active lifestyle | Stuff.co.nz

Getting more people more active more often was the key message of the first Outdoor Recreation Expo 2012.

The expo, held yesterday at the Tahunanui Recreation Reserve, was organised by Sport Tasman. Exhibitors included the Conservation Department, NZ Fish and Mountain Safety Council and clubs and teams. Sport Tasman community senior adviser Dave Tippett said it had gone well. "It was an awesome, awesome day. The feedback on the day from participants and exhibitors was that it was really, really good."

The expo was a free event for the public, with exhibitors being those that had an interest or part to play in getting people into the outdoors, Mr Tippett said.

"Sport Tasman traditionally works in the sports space, we have a vision to get more people more active, more often."

There was also a big push on the safety aspect of outdoors recreation, because they wanted people to come back and be able to continue to pursue their outdoor adventures safely, he said.

The DOC exhibit was "bursting at the seams" and the underwater club was also popular.

The aero club and sailing exhibits were also busy, as was the casting demonstration.

"The kite surfing and windsurfing exhibit kind of took my interest," Mr Tippett said.

Because the day was a "bit of a moving beast", with people coming and going, it was hard to pinpoint how many had been, but Mr Tippett said he estimated somewhere between 1000 and 1500 had visited. They were still in the process of going through official feedback, but Mr Tippett was confident they would be looking at running another expo next year.
